I wish I could be objective enough to criticize the episode on all its issues, but, just...helpless to the D/E. I am not evolved. Alas.

I definitely could have used more Rose. I was super happy to see her, but there was very little of actual Rose we got to see. I was also secretly hoping that Damon would confess to her his feelings of accountability for her death, because they always had an honest relationship, and that could have been good stuff. Oh well.

Maybe they don't have Katherine's number. She seems very much the "don't call us, we'll call you" type.

Because then "doing it right" and "getting Elena's love" become mixed up, and if they do fuck up, they can make it about insufficient love from Elena, and that's something they can blame on each other. Or, if she ever does get out of Mystic Falls or fall for someone else, they can use their ~shared heartbreak to strengthen their bond.

I love this. I love the whole idea that both of them being in love with Elena unites them rather than dividing them. Salvatores forever, basically.

For his part, Stefan clearly cares more about "taking back control of [his] life" than he does about winning Elena back - and rightfully so! - but he's still clinging to the idea of her as a moral guide and motivation because he doesn't trust himself enough to do it yet.

See, I love this, but I still worry that the show somehow supports his conviction that he's doing this for Elena. It's still playing too much into the S/E side of things and not enough into the elusive Stefan arc. But we live in hope.

I like that Stefan's trying to deal with his issues, and I very much like the pro-free-will sentiment behind it. But that's not the mirror-talk it's supposed to be, because RIC IS BEING FUCKING RING-ROOFIED.

YES, THIS. Ngl, I enjoyed the Stefan/Alaric scenes, because they finally made this Alaric arc interesting to me. But I just could not with the idea that Stefan and Alaric are parallels, because, no. Just. No.

SUCH a good call about Claire Holt! I noticed the differences in her performance in the final scene, but you're right, she did kind of disappear in her scenes between the end and the possession, and now it makes sense. Is Claire Holt a cast member yet? Make this happen, show.

I'm actually...not that worried about Tyler? Because he's so the obvious death of the season that I think they might try to shock us (as they do) and go for someone else. But I could be staggeringly wrong. We'll see.

That's fair! I feel like all the thought and work in this episode went toward the D/E scenes. I'd probably be a lot more forgiving if it were my ship.

That's legit. This show is much better for me if the author is dead. I don't ever pay attention to the love triangles as more than a convenient way to showcase everyone's psychological issues, which I think is the only way a show about love triangles can be interesting for this long (or, at all).

I hope you are right!
