it's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards. (adventures in doctor who)

As some of you know, I have been trying to catch Doctor Who enthusiasm, on and off, for literally years, SO THIS IS A VERY EXCITING POST FOR ME TO WRITE. I tried to somewhat organize the squee, but seriously, abandon linearity, all ye who enter here. S4 is where I fall in love with it and watch the whole thing, but there are spoilers for most of ( Read more... )

I enjoyed this quite a bit! I think I agree down the line. I do think that "it's not magic, it's SKIENCE!" is something that is basically constant across all science-fiction, though; Doctor Who is more fantasy-y than Star Trek (where there are science advisers on staff, and it still sounds like gibberish), but it's part of basically the same thing. And indeed it goes back to Verne and Wells, plus Arthur C. Clarke's dictum that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. This is a good show to explore that tension though, especially the privileged-coded white male-ness of the Doctor.

I think Blink is overrated, honestly. I think the John Smith two-parter might actually be the show's (the show = the RTD era, since I haven't watched the old shows) best episode(s), and I can discuss this at length at some point.

Blink is a perfect stand-alone episode, I think, but that's pretty inherently limiting. The John Smith two-parter is certainly among the strongest, though, I'd love to hear more thoughts on it.

Before i comment intelligently, i just want to say sorry, because if you've glanced at tumblr in the past month and a half, I've been shamelessly, thoughtlessly vomiting rainbows and spoilers for new who but especially season 5 and 6.

My bad.

Or not so intelligently, because all i really want to do is flail all over this.

Though, i have to admit, i am still waiting for a better resolution to Donna's arc, because while i agree that her mindwipe makes some kind of sense in the narrative, i still find it kind of awful for Donna's sake.

And I love the Master, and the fucked up homoerotic relationship he and the Doctor have. The Master needs to come back as played by a ginger Benedict Cumberbatch.

I hope so too! There's an early S5 episode with is entirely too far on-the-nose for me to think it's been dropped completely, so that's positive, at least.

as played by a ginger Benedict Cumberbatch.

I WANT TO GO TO THERE.

no worries! I haven't been on tumblr much lately, to be honest, it slows down my machine so much I hardly ever bother. (and even if I had, I have only myself to blame for being four years behind!)

YAY YOU DID IT

What if God was one of us? Just a stranger on the bus? He'd probably wear kooky glasses and twitch for a while. -- HEE! I unabashedly love the science dorkness too. Don't even care if it contains any logic.

S3 and S4 are very strong. As is S5, though I'm interested to see your thoughts on the shift from RTD to Moffat.

And we all know I love me some crazy eyes. -- BAHA. Yes. I love Ten too, for all his Man Pain. At least he is charming and hilarious. (I will forgive anything if it's charming and hilarious, pity me.)

Also those black plastic glasses are The Sex. WELL PLAYED, DOCTOR. -- PREACH.

Rose, I think, convinced herself that she wanted the Doctor when really, what she wanted was to be him. -- YES. Thank you. You just articulated why I do love Rose's friendship with the Doctor, and why it confuses me that fandom at large reduces it down to some silly romantic infatuation thing. She was in love with the life of adventure he offered. That's it, folks.

Because she does make the world better by shouting at it. ( ... )

Dude, Ten is fascinating. I mean, the Doctor is a massive study in identity, and then within that, there's this persona experiencing a very human identity crisis, which gets compounded even more when he does give up his own identity for a couple of episodes in the John Smith arc.

Well, in fairness to the fandom, half of the script writers don't entirely understand that, and so there are a few winceworthy anvil moments about her (understandable but still not all-encompassing) crush. Though yeah, when viewers choose to focus on that rather than the equally obvious characterization outside of the ship, that's gross.

Oooh, Doctor/Jack. Yes. My OTP is forever Doctor/Master, but I enjoy a good fling with that other ship. I ship them in very different ways. My perspective on Jack/Doctor is almost entirely one-sided. Jack ( ... )

It's a lot of fun! You might have to skip around to get into the swing of it, but it's worth it.
