homecoming (tvd 3x09)

“I’m the weak link….WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T WANT ME INVOLVED?” lol, Elena, never change. I know you won’t. I really love her in this episode, with her mostly utilizing her deviousness and high EQ to set herself up to dagger Rebekah, but she’s also made herself physically strong enough that she can actually drive the dagger in. Then once her part of the plan is done, she backs off instead of throwing a wrench into everything. And by the end, she’s embraced her commitment to life - we survive, we always do. Stefan was her flirtation with death; she has to let go (at least as she’s known him up until now) in order to live.

And it did all go to shit because someone let their humanity get in the way. THAT SOMEONE BEING KATHERINE OH MY GOD SHE IS PERFECT. It’s one thing for Stefan to maybe give up his freedom from Klaus (and he’ll never really be free as long as Klaus survives) but for Katherine to give up hers, and put herself at risk? He thought of everything BUT that he was at risk going up against Klaus himself, and that Stefan and Katherine might throw everything away for him, THAT WAS THE UNTHINKABLE. OH DAMON.

I am so excited to see where Stefan - out of his cage for real this time, not affiliated with any side except maybe the chaotic Katherine - goes when we pick back up. Now all he knows he has going for him is being Klaus’ EX FROM HELL. Stefan is now free to pursue his unlife’s true calling: FULL-TIME TROLL. I love him again. I mean, the “we’ll let him go! He’s GONE” is about as believable as the “THERE IS NO GOOD IN DAMON, NONE AT ALL” refrain of the first two seasons, but still, right now Stefan has no reason to think it’s not true.

C/T lost me. Caroline just…wants Tyler to be upset. Tyler is right, it can’t be changed. So what, he’s supposed to be helplessly miserable about something that can’t be fixed and doesn’t actually leave him any worse off? I mean, he’s being a massive dick to her, and she’d be well within her rights to tell him to fuck off until he figures it out. But the way she’s been talking to him in the last few episodes - “have you tried not being sired? And being more apologetic about your GROSS, UNCHANGEABLE self?” -buttons pushed, urgh. It’s obscuring the fact that Tyler is going down a dark road. He’s totally drunk with power, and everyone putting it on whatever his tie is to Klaus obscures the real issues (DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF ANYTHING??) for everyone. It is okay for him to be glad he doesn’t have to go through that anymore, it doesn’t mean he has to be bad. But “you’re one of the bad guys now,” everyone is thinking in all-or-nothing terms, not just him.

And OH, REBEKAH, and her ambivalent little face. “No one in my family can [be trusted].” I don’t think Rebekah’s even going to be pissed that Elena staked her. Maybe a little irritable that the stupid human got the jump on her, (if she wasn’t actually angling for it, which I wondered about) but really, I think she’ll be relieved she didn’t have to be a part of it one way or the other.

I was assuming there would be Elijah during the confrontation and now I’m a little disappointed! As it were, Mikael becomes all about Klaus, which is a fantastic inversion of the genetics=everything mess that I’ve been so annoyed about. Mikael was still Klaus’ father in every way that matters, and that’s how he goes out.

So, if Klaus really were looking to kill Mikael, and not freaking out at the last moment, then who was it that caught Mikael and chained him up in the last century? And did the dagger burn up with Mikael? Because if so, all they accomplished with the whole thing was making Klaus completely unkillable, rather than virtually unkillable. They picked a fight with Klaus entirely on their own turf, and he still beat them.
