Day Ten: Favorite female character in a scifi/supernatural show: Looking at this list, it should probably be favorite not from a science fiction/supernatural show, which is a thing I never would have predicted three or four years ago. Also not a part of my life three or four years ago: Veronica Mars.
Veronica Mars as a noir heroine is an idea that’s been re-hashed over and I doubt I have anything new to add to that. Really, it’s just as simple and brilliant a single substitution as making Starbuck into Kara, but because Veronica Mars lives on Earth (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) (also, CLICK, no wonder I got so bored so fast with the S3/4 polygon of doom, because I had seen it all before, it’s basically Veronica/Logan on SPACE STEROIDS) (THERE IS SO MUCH BOO-HOOING, CHRISTY, THIS IS NOT EVEN A SPOILER BECAUSE YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY IMAGINE), there’s no pretending that being female isn’t an issue for her, which I actually think sets up more and stronger storytelling possibilities for Veronica. She has very realistic, painful growth throughout the series, when really, it would have been easy for the show to flatten her into one dimension. But, though the story did devolve into some really problematic gender and sexuality politics, particularly toward the end, Veronica herself stayed complicated and fucked-up and likable and uncertain of herself without being self-effacing. And while it’s quite sad for us that the show was canceled when it was, it’s also kind of nice that when we part ways with Veronica, we can know that her story is only beginning.
Day Eleven: Favorite female character in a children’s show: Topanga Lawrence
Cory: [reading attendance sheet] Lawrence, Topanga?
Topanga: [sitting on the floor on a pillow] I am channeling. I will only answer to the name of: [opens eyes] Oommmmmooooooowwwwwwooo! (Teacher’s Bet)
LOVE.
