So yeah, I know everyone is worked up over this episode. Tags on tumblr are going crazy, Youtube exploded with RumpBelle vids (including my own), and just the fandom in general is going nuts over it.
Funny thing is, I've only seen a few really negative reviews about the episode which is and is not quite surprising. Why is it surprising? Because HALF THE FANDOM was pissed off when it was confirmed that Rumpels was the beast. I talked about this in my last post, so I won't go too far into it now. Seriously, people were threatening to stop watching the show; it was getting ridiculous. Now everyone is saying how much RumpBelle is their OTP. That's a big turnaround. Even people who didn't really like Rumpels likes them together.
It's not surprising, on the other hand, because it actually was a pretty good episode. Now, my review.
The bad (so I can get it out of the way):
Belle herself. Oh, the acting was good but there is just something about her I didn't really care for. If you asked me to compare her to the Disney Belle then I would like to point out so many differences. However, I don't like comparing because I find it unfair to the writers and the actors who wanted there to be some difference; plus, that's what everyone does. Belle seems to be main reason some people didn't like the episode and I think that comparing the Belles is the main reason. -I'll explain my own reasons in a minute.- They expected to see the Belle they grew up watching; the Belle who outright rejected Gaston, read books, got into "couple fights" with the beast, only left because her father was sick, etc. Well, I didn't see anybody complaining when they made Snow White the practically opposite badass in this show compared to the Disney movie. Seriously people! They are not trying to ruin your childhoods, they're just trying something new.
My reasons for not liking Belle. Actually, it's not that I didn't like Belle, I actually really did. My issue with her was that she didn't really develop very much. We got lots of Rumpel development, but not much Belle. Now this I'm actually ok with in the end. Why? Writer of the episode Jane Espenson (bless her) said on her twitter that 18 minutes of the episode had to be cut. As soon as I read that I was like "Ohhhhh, that's where Belle's character development went; that's where more of the beauty and beats falling in love went." With that said, I pretty much forgive everything in the episode that relatively put me off in my first viewing (I've watched the episode about four times now XD). I really hope they release an uncut version of the episode, possibly with the DVD. That would make me sooo happy.
Anything I can't forgive, but it's necessary to the plot? David. GEEZUZ CHRISTMAS DAVID! Stop beign a cheating jerk and just pick one! Seriously, I love MM and David together but the fact that David was doing it behind Kathryn's back is inexcusable. I'm still surprised MM went along with it. Thanks GAWD that next episode they'll be resolving it... I hope. Another thing, EVIL QUEEN IS EVIL. She keeps giving me excuses to hate her. She really is that character you love to hate. And yes, I still think that the EQ is the miller's daughter (it might explain another reason why she and Rumpels are such rivals).
The good:
One word: acting. The acting in this episode was superb! The Emmys better take note of RC in this episode because he was beyond fantastic! There are just no words to describe how amazing he was in this episode. Emilie was excellent too, as I mentioned before.
They really did pull this off well. I was afraid it was going to be either really bad or really good and it turned out to be the latter. Now I could ramble on for hours and pages and pages, but I won't bore you. In fact I might add more to this review (if I do I'll notify); but for now, I'll leave it like it is. I really do hope that they release an uncut version of this episode because other than a feeling of lack-of relationship development I really loved this episode.
