there's nothing more fun than being weird, especially in public places with other weird people.
Thus, when I found BSU flashmob on facebook, wel~l... I didn't wait long to join.
So, we come to ball state's first ever flash mob, today at noon.
It was to go down high noon at the scramble light. Bring a pillow.
Imagine my joy as my previous class got out with ample time to travel across campus and stake out a spot to inconspicuously draw in my sketchbook while I waited out the 15 or so minutes until noon.
my trained weird person's eye soon picked out other mobsters- people standing around nonchalantly watching the scramble light, messenger bags and laptop cases suspiciously overstuffed. Afterall, what good was causing confusion if you had your weapon out where normal folks could see them and perhaps divine what was about to happen?
It's a lovely day for a flashmob.
My cell phone told me another few minutes had passed, and more people came to loiter, picking eachother out, chatting quietly. We notice the camera set up on a tripod, various people with cameras.
5 'till. Another cycle goes by, we crowd. Not quite yet, disperse a little...
noon comes, and with excellent timing the scramble light starts chirping. we surge into the inytersection, not quite sure...
until I and a few others scream out 'PILLOW FIGHT'. All hell breaks loose as i draw my lime green pillow and set forth, 30-50 of us attacking each other in a huddled writhing mass of flying pillows.
The counter ticks down, we flee the intersection- one poor sod has to dash back in with 2 seconds to go to grab his sandle.
Flash mob completed, and i can't wait for the next one.
It is very much a tribute to the power of the internet. When I joined the group, there were approximately 30. By the end of the day, 70. Less than a week later, it had ballooned to 200 some, and as of right now we have 266 people.
many of the group members couldn't make it today because of work or classes. who knows what we could do if all the people watching the group on facebook were able to come at once? would it make it better? or is there a certain point where the flashmob becomes too big, and loses coherency?
They're things to test, in future events. for now, I'll just bask in the fact that a bunch of complete strangers and I had a moment of surrealist fun.
and we're going to do so again.
