Sometime between the third week of their relationship and the fourth week, Mirek's things start migrating to Brooklyn. He still spends most of his time in Manhattan--he has to, of course, he has a business to run, plants to tend to, family to check up on--but there's a particular point that Gideon notices that Mirek stops acting like a guest and ( Read more... )

I keep forgetting that most people don't know Mirek's backstory because it (obvs) hasn't come up in the general timeline and I never finished the story about it in the kittens and flowers timeline. (That's an interesting story, too. I just have to, you know, finish and post it.) But I've had the whole thing all written out since I applied to the HWH rpg, so I'm always writing with it in mind. XD

Here are some tidbits that probably won't make it into any stories but are interesting nonetheless (and will tide you over until I finish something significant):
• Marenka was named for the main character in the Czech opera The Bartered Bride. She was very proud of this as a girl, but started going by her nickname (Mara) once she came to America because she doesn't like the way Americans pronounce her name.
• Mirek could speak Czech, Slovak, and German fluently at age seven when he came to live with Marenka, but his English skills were weak, so she spent the entire summer drilling him on the language and speaking to him only in English and German (which was more closely linked to English than Czech) in order to get him ready to attend school in the fall. Once Mirek was fluent in English, they went back to speaking almost exclusively Czech at home.
• Because Mirek and Marenka speak Czech at home, Valentine has picked up a great deal of the language and knows more Czech then she does French, despite studying French for eleven years.
• Mirek dated a girl named Darcy for his junior and senior years of high school. She knew he was gay practically the entire time, but she also thought he was the sweetest, classiest guy in school, so she stayed with him anyway.
• The name of Marenka and Mirek's flowershop is "Lily of the Village." They both think it's a groan-inducingly stupid name, but it was named by Marenka's husband and neither of them have the heart to change it.

Hi, I meant to reply to this days ago. The last one about the name of the shop made me laugh -- how adorably indulgent of them and it gives me such an idea of what Marenka's husband was like. Their little family (Valentine included) is soooooo awesome. I feel as though if I went wandering through NYC I could actually find a little floral shop run by an elder Czech lady and co.

:DDDDDDD

(Also, I'm watching SGA and Michael is totally creeping me out. I just thought I'd share with the class.)
