fall mix - yesterday was blue, like smoke

This is what I do instead of doing the things I should be doing.

yesterday was blue, like smoke

a fall mix

I know I've mentioned to a few of you before that I heavily associate seasons with particular songs and albums. Not necessarily because they're about autumn (although a few of these are), but because they just leave me with an autumn feeling, one that the quote in the graphic (made a few years ago by speccygeekgrrl and used [incredibly belatedly] with her permission) summarizes perfectly for me.

Autumnal - nothing to do with leaves. It is to do with a certain brownness at the edges of the day... Brown is creeping up on us, take my word for it.... Russets and tangerine shades of old gold flushing the very outside edge of the senses...deep shining ochres, burnt umber and parchments of baked earth - reflecting on itself and through itself, filtering the light. At such times, perhaps, coincidentally, the leaves might fall, somewhere, by repute. Yesterday was blue, like smoke.
--Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

I've been meaning to make this mix for awhile, but something about the Dar Williams song "The End of the Summer" kicked me into gear, finally, when I was listening to it last week.

So here we go. Links to songs under the cut. If you have any problems, comment and I'll try to help. Also, if you DL any of these, please comment as well? I'd like to know what people think of them.

one; Dar Williams - The End of the Summer

the summer ends and we wonder where we are
and there you go, my friends, with your boxes in your car
and you both look so young
and last night was hard, you said
you packed up every room
and then you cried and went to bed
but today you closed the door and said
"we have to get a move on.
it's just that time of year when we push ourselves ahead,
we push ourselves ahead."

two; Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

you step inside but you don't see too many faces
coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
too much competition too many other places
but not too many horns can make that sound
way on down south way on down south london town

three; Rilo Kiley - The Absence of God

we could be daytime drunks if we wanted
we'd never get anything done that way baby
and we'd still be ruled by our dueling perspectives
and i'm not my perspective
or the lies i'll tell you every time

four; Ducan Sheik - Reasons for Living

welcome to another day
it don't seem that different 'cause nothing has changed
i try to remember, try to remember
when we were just running in place

five; Paul Simon - American Tune

but it's alright, it's alright
for we lived so well so long
still, when i think of the
road we're traveling on
i wonder what's gone wrong
i can't help it, i wonder what has gone wrong

six; Elvis Costello - When I was Cruel (Part 2)

look at her now
she's starting to yawn
she looks like she was born to it
but it was so much easier
when i was cruel

seven; Barenaked Ladies - Same Thing

i found me an answer, in a grocery store
i found me an answer in the form of
an old man with a cardigan on
this guy's got thirty years on me
but he stops and smiles just to say, "hello!
didn't i see you on teevee?"

eight; Sarah McLachlan - Good Enough

hey your glass is empty
it's a hell of a long way home
why don't you let me take you
it's no good to go alone
i never would have opened up
but you seemed so real to me
after all the bullshit i've heard
it's refreshing not to see

nine; Katy Pfaffl - Over and Over

cause you grew so pale
even the moonlight left you stale
and out of place
as you lost your grace

ten; Coldplay - The Scientist

i was just guessing at numbers and figures
pulling your puzzles apart
questions of science, science and progress
do not speak as loud as my heart
tell me you love me, come back and haunt me
oh and i rush to the start

eleven; Ben Folds Five - Don't Change Your Plans

all i know is i've gotta be
where my heart says i oughta be
it often makes no sense, in fact
i never understand these things i feel

twelve; Belle and Sebastian - Me and the Major

but he doesn't understand and he doesnt try
he knows theres something missing and he knows it's you and i
We're the younger generation, we grew up fast
all the others did drugs,
they're taking it out on us

thirteen; Matchbox Twenty - The Burn

forgot about
everything and everyone i needed before
tryin' to get a handle on a reason to shine
pickin' up the pieces that are falling behind takes time

fourteen; Indigo Girls - Ghost

and the mississippi's mighty
but it starts in minnesota
at a place that you could walk across
with five steps down
and i guess that's how you started
like a pinprick to my heart
but at this point you rush right through me
and i start to drown

fifteen; Kenny Loggins - Return to Pooh Corner

he came to me asking help and advice
and from here no one knows where he goes
so i sent him to ask of the owl if he's there
how to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear

sixteen; Kathy McCarty - Living Life

i can't help being restless
when everything's so tasteless
and all the colors seem to have faded away

seventeen; Paul Simon - The Teacher

sometimes we don't know who we are
sometimes force overpowers us and we cry
my teacher, carry me home

eighteen; Scott Chasolen (and Katy Pfaffl) - Down the Line

and now the days are going faster and faster
and we never seem to wonder
how we're leaving it all behind
still the days are going faster and faster
moving on down the line

nineteen; Lucy Kaplansky - For Once In Your Life

i would tell you that i'm sorry, but i know what you would say
'cause i think that you forgave me long ago
i really don't know why, i don't think i deserve it
maybe a person forgives so they don't have to be alone

twenty; Suzanne Vega - In Liverpool

homesick for a clock that told the same time
sometimes you made no sense to me
if you lie on the ground
in somebody's arms
you'll probably swallow some of their history

twenty-one; Swim - The Fall

in comes the fall
all the long walks through the leaves
in comes the fall
vacancies beneath all of the eaves
in comes the fall
harvest moons still in evenings like these

i see you, mother
in most beautiful shades

mix cd, music
