remix reveals!
I still have a million things to update about, but REMIX REVEALS HAPPENED. I meant to read all the X-related ones and do a rec post before reveals, but I have been SUPER busy lately and didn't even manage to read any of the Remix Madness stories that weren't for me, SO.
First off, the AMAZINGLY STEALTHY littledust wrote kids who go to school (the drop the dime remix) and KEPT IT A SECRET FOR WEEKS by WRITING AN ENTIRE ADDITIONAL DECOY STORY. Oh my god. I mean. Oh my god. If any of the five people reading this don't know, littledust and I are RL FRIENDS and have hung out MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THIS PERIOD. STEALTHY.
The lovely post-X3 Erik introspective piece in the garden was by Red and it was BEAUTIFUL. Work a Miracle (the You're So Fond Remix), a Ianto/Jack spin on a mixed media fic of mine about Gwen's honeymoon was by coricomile, and the other four stories I got were by my buds whom I immediately guessed based on pairing (Moral Fools (A Midsummer Night's Remix) by bessiemaemucho), crossover choice (Restaurant Proximity Associates (The JJ's Diner Remix) by metonymy). background details (Snail Mail (The Bone Wars Mix) by littledust), or because they texted me and told me (apple season (year after year remix) by pearl_o).
NOW, onto the reveals!! I wrote five stories overall, totaling 31,088 words, because I have a sickness.
A Nice Boy (the Family Matters Edition) - Erik/Charles, Edie, Jakob, Ruth - Modern Powered AU - 20k, Teen
My main assignment was for pearl_o who I talk to all day every day about everything, but especially writing, so my immediate reaction to my assignment was not, "Yay! I love Erica's stories! This will be great!" but rather, "THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE HOW DO I KEEP IT A SECRET MAYBE IF I FAKE MY OWN DEATH." I also write her at least one remix every year, so that sort of cut down on available material. Thankfully, Pearl has a zillion great stories, so I narrowed it down to five and then two and then got to work on 20k words on family and history and love and connection and brunch.
This is a story about Erik learning to love (his family) again ten years after surviving eighteen months in a mutant experimentation facility that was billed as an elite mutant "academy" to desperate parents. There's a nice slow-burn romance between Erik and Charles, who's writing a book on the facilities a decade later, but the main conflict is Erik allowing himself to open up to his parents and sister after a decade of distancing himself out of self-defense. I could probably write about my thoughts on this fic for hours, but I'll stop here and just say that I quite like it, and many, MANY thanks to bessiemaemucho and littledust for an AMAZING beta job and to greeneyes73180 for letting me write the bulk of it in her apartment on my vacation to Atlanta.
empty your hands and look up (the 2015 remix) - Charles/Erik, a baby - Modern Powered AU - 5k, Teen
This was also a gift for Pearl, a decoy remix madness story to throw her off from thinking I wrote her main gift before the archive opened. It was the number two stories in my narrowed down list above, and one of my first times doing a scene-for-scene remix. It went SO QUICKLY already having the plot and structure in place!! The original is set during the recruitment trip during the movie and has Erik as excellent with children and Charles as floundering (probably due to Erik's tragic dead baby backstory). I reimagined it as a modern AU where they're still establishing a school for the first time. Here, Charles is good with babies and Erik is lost at sea. This was SO much fun. I could probably also talk for hours about what an interesting process this was, but I won't.

mrkinch's drabbles are GREAT FUN to remix. This is the second one I've done. The original was Charles living with the ghost of Erik in his head after DoFP, and mine is the reverse. I'm not 100% happy with how it came out, mostly because I recognize that I am far too wordy. I had another idea for this one that I might do for X-Men Remix, so we'll see. But I love the original and this was a great exercise in brevity.
dreams that you dare to dream (the skies are blue remix) - Lorna, Kate/Betty, Gladys, Vera - Modern AU, G
I love littledust's Bomb Girls coffeeshop idea, and it was a TON of fun to rewrite it from Lorna's PoV and flesh out where the coffeeshop came from, how all the girls found it, and what it means to Lorna to have them there. Lorna is a character whom I was on the fence about at the start of the series but grew to love fiercely and it was great fun to write even an AU version of her.
the things you said when you were scared (the face your fears remix) - Blue/Gansey, Gansey's anixety disorder - Post-BLLB, G
Oh man, I thought this one would be a dead giveaway as mine to anyone who knew me + liked TRC because I am OBSESSED with Gansey's panic/anxiety issues, particularly the scene in BLLB where they're in the Cabeswater cave and he has a panic attack. I wanted to write something not X-related for my last remix and found this story of momebie's and immediately knew I wanted to flip it to write about Gansey trying (and failing) to face his fears in a cave. This one was a race against the clock, but I won the race! (And then found out that the Remix Madness collection REMAINED OPEN ALL WEEK I COULD HAVE BEEN WRITING REMIXES ALL WEEK WHEN I WAS BORED AT WORK WHAT THE HELL.)
