Hi, internet! HAPPY GALENTINE'S DAY!

I am in the process of distributing some Galentine's Day cards I made but here is something FOR YOU, internet, because you are made up of some of the finest gals I know!

I made a mix! It's short (just ten songs) and it's all ladies! (Obvs. It's Galentine's Day.) The themes are "awesome ladies," "songs that remind me of people I know," and "lesbians."

Somebody Who Sees Me
A Galentine's Day Mix

I'm not that petty
As cool as I am,
I'd thought you'd know this already.
I will not be afraid of women.
I will not be afraid of women.

1. Dar Williams - As Cool As I Am

Basically half of Dar's back catalogue would fit this mix, but this is the Dar song that most screams lady solidarity and sisterhood. It's about a woman breaking free of a relationship where her boyfriend constantly compares her to other women and refusing to see those women as the enemy as he intends.

(It's also good to know in case you ever stumble into a Dar concert or a folk festival or just into a car with a lot of ladies who like folk music or into my house because she does this one as a sing along nine times out of ten and there's this part where she stops playing on the line "I am the others" and it's just all these ladies singing and maybe you start to ugly cry all over your friends because of the intense sense of belonging in that moment. Maybe. ::shifty eyes::)

I am an undisputed ace in the hole
I am an undercover angel
I am an undeniable story untold
I am undaunted, underrated
I am underneath

2. Mighty Kate - Underneath

Mighty Kate is a New York-based singer/songwriter who is just wonderful. If you're ever in the area and she's playing, you should absolutely go see her. She just got done with a run in War Horse, so I imagine there will be more shows coming up soon! Also, I love this song and I've loved it since the first time I heard her play it ♥

I've been the wild one
I've run through the streets and I've suffered
I've been the quiet one
Sequestered and smothered

3. Gregory and the Hawk - People Who Raised Me

True life fact: I was at Purchase College at the same time as Meredith Godreau! (I didn't know her or anything, I just saw her at the Student Center sometimes.)

The saddest sight my eyes can see
Is that big ball of orange sinking slyly down the trees
Sitting in a broken circle while you rest upon my knee
This perfect moment will soon be leaving me

4. Indigo Girls - Get Out the Map

This song always makes me think of bessiemaemucho. Not because we are nomadic lesbian lovers, but because I think she sent it to me a million years ago. So here is one that is both about lesbians (and all the ladies they know on their own journeys) AND that reminds me of a friend.

Do you know where friendship ends
and passion does begin?
It's between the binding of
her stockings and her skin.

5. Suzanne Vega - Stockings

Continuing the lesbian trend!

Always looking for a place to rest
I hid in trees and built my nest
I made my nest of buried things
And the roots ran like secrets
Through six year rings

6. Lucy Kaplansky - This is Mine

When I lived at home (both in high school and post-college) I went to a lot of Lucy Kaplansky shows with my mom ♥

We don't need no goals
don't need human connection,
Dreams are overrated
'cause our life's already perfection

7. Garfunkel and Oates - Only You

This song is about me and mcwonthelottery.

So if you ever wonder if I’m dreaming of you
in the night at my window by the light of the moon?
If you ever wonder if if I’m dreaming of you,
Bitch please…I’ve got better things to do.

8. April Smith and the Great Picture Show - Stop Wondering

I...can't remember why I put this song on here instead of "Wow and Flutter." April Smith is great, though! And this song is sassy! And you should go buy her album and follow her on Twitter and look at pictures of her baby that she posts non-stop!

And what you make of it, let me say
You get what you take from it so be amazed
And never stop, never stop, never stop
You gotta be brave

9. The Weepies - All This Beauty

The Weepies are technically a duo and the other half is technically a dude, but Deb sings this song and Deb is awesome and The Weepies are awesome and this song is great. Sometimes you just have to be reminded that things are awesome!

Under the water there’s nothing but blue,
Surrounding me, surrounding you.
We’ll just have each other, in this deep dark world,
Fingers clasped, with your mermaid girl.

10. Bess Rogers - In the Waves

At a show I was at once, Bess referred to this song as a creepy lesbian mermaid love song, and what better way to end a Galentine's mix, I say?

Download here! Complete with cover art. But I will warn you in advance that I didn't like, make it fancy or change the iTunes metadata, so please don't be disappointed in me :(

Anyway, HAPPY GALENTINE'S DAY, INTERNET. At the end of the day, I'll do a round up of the cards I made so you can see them!

mix cd, galentine's day, the weepies, music, dar williams, friends
