Internet. I have to get through three. days. of work.
I'm already bored and antsy. Ugh. So here's a meme that I stole from tumblr. I did it on there a long while back, but never here and I feel LJ is a better vehicle for rambling endlessly about things anyway, so here it is. Pick a number from the list and I'll answer it in the comments.

Haha, uh, yes. I spent most of my youth fantasizing about self-insert adventures with my favorite characters (the one I remember best is the one where I was BFF with Penny from Inspector Gadget) or acting out elaborate stories with my action figures and dolls, but the first fic I ever put to paper with the understanding that I was writing fanfiction, with the knowledge that someone else was going to read it, was a Real Adventures of Jonny Quest story I wrote in emails to quatredeathlady. I was ten. The story, if I remember correctly, stole a lot of elements of the TXF episode "Ice." The Quest gang were snowed in at a research center where they were being held by terrorists (maybe Surd's gang) and there was an alien entity and Jessie and Jonny (who somehow escaped) had to do a lot of crawling in the airducts to try and rescue everyone.
It was never finished and never posted anywhere else. Thank god.

I don't know that I can say that I've abandoned any ships, per se? There are tons of things that I no longer actively read/write for, but usually once I'm in, I'm in, and every time I revisit that canon, I can't help but still think, "Ugh, they're still so in love!"
Oh, here's one, actually! I sort of shipped Teyla/Ronon for a little while in S2 of SGA. That fight scene in "The Lost Boys" is pretty sexy, and they had a sort of interesting dynamic as the two outsiders on Atlantis. Also, I admit, I liked the idea of the team as two couples XD But as the show went on, it became clear they were more buds than lovers and I started to ship them both with other ladies. I still read the occasional fic, but I didn't write them together anymore and I didn't actively seek out new fanworks about them.
ALSO OMG OMG OMG OMG I'M SO EXCITED TO SEEEEEEEE YOOOOOUUUUUUUUU ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm very lucky in that a lot of my favorite fanauthors/artists are also friends and are frequently kind enough to indulge my whims and make things they know I'll like :D My very favorite fanartist, shaliara wins the ultimate "indulging my whims" award for agreeing to illustrate my upcoming big bang, so that alone is beyond my happiest dreams.
But as for specific requests, it depends on the person. I like to play to people's strengths. pearl_o is really good at capturing the emotion and meaning behind deceptively simple acts and how those acts can be a turning point. littledust manages to capture the dynamic of the whole team and how they work together and orbit around the relationship between Charles and Erik. aesc does mutant politics like no one else. And those are just three examples of things I read in other people's stories and think, "Oh god, that's amazing, why can't I do that ( ... )

There are TOO MANY TO COUNT. Seriously. I've read a ton of fic in a ton of fandoms over the years and there's stuff I'll always love in all of them. What I'll give you here is my Kindle List - the stuff that stays on my Kindle for me to read whenever I'm trapped somewhere and want to read something but don't want to start a new book:
SGA:
A Farm in Iowa
Torchwood:
The Theory of Two Centres
XMFC:
From Westminster With Love
Limited Release
The Die Hard AU that I can't remember the name of off the top of my head. It's by Yahtzee and everything about it is perfect.
It Takes a Heap O' Living
Try Try Again (which is really too short to be Kindle fic but I DON'T CARE.)
Links available by request, but I'm at work and don't want to go sifting through the internet for them right now :)
But yes. That's in no way an exhaustive list of favorites, just some comfort reads that I keep handy.

In XMFC it's...uh, anything multi-shippy about Charles and Erik? I'm SO hardline OTP about them that I can't read/write/consider them with anyone else, even in a threesome situation. I feel like there's a lot of good fic out there that I'm missing because of that. I particularly kind of wish I could ship Charles/Erik/Moira, because I love Moira and I love her dynamic with both of them and I think it would be FASCINATING, but the part of me that thinks it would be fascinating is shouted out by the part of me that's like, "NOOOOOOOO!!! THEY'RE IN LOVE!!! ONLY WITH EACH OTHER!!! FOREVER!!! NO ONE ELSE!!! LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!"
More recently, I wish I shipped anyone in Avengers the way that all my friends do. I think I'm the only person I know (save one) who ships Clint/Natasha, but even with that (and my hardwired shipping of Steve/Tony, thanks to brainwashing from harmonyangel), I generally just want to read gen fic?

And yeah, I can totally see that with Charles/Erik. XMFC just never felt much like an OTmore fandom to me in general, barring pprfaith's Weight of Water because omg that story was perfect.
