"Hey! Lehnsherr! Hey!"
Erik turns at the sound of his name. He's got a sharp word ready for whoever's making him late for swim practice, but it dies on his lips when he sees it's Munoz. Darwin, they call him. Hell if Erik knows why.
"Munoz," Erik says, nodding at him.
"Your boyfriend left this in class," Munoz says, and he pulls a three ring binder out of his bag. It's very clearly one of Charles'--he can see the color-coded tabs sticking out the side of the same standard, black one-inch three ring that Charles keeps for each of his eight million classes. BioEthics is written on the side. "We have Emerging Tech together," Munoz explains. "I guess it fell out of his bag, but he left this morning before I could catch him."
"Thanks," Erik says. Then, belatedly, "Charles isn't my boyfriend."
Munoz gives Erik a look like he's the crazy one, like he's the one going around, jumping to conclusions just because two guys spend a lot of time together. And, okay, maybe Charles is always all over him, but that's just because Charles is weird about personal space. Which is fine. And it would be rude for Erik to discourage it, so he doesn't, because maybe Charles really needs those hugs and that hand to hold and if he does, who is Erik to deny him? He just wants Charles to be happy. For friend reasons.
"Right," Munoz says. "Whatever. Make sure he gets it?"
"Yeah," Erik says. "I'll give it to him at dinner. He already had Ethics at 8, so he doesn't need it this afternoon."
"You know his schedule?" Munoz asks. Erik nods. "But you're not his boyfriend?" Erik shakes his head. "And he was sitting on top of you at the Kappa house last weekend because...?"
"He was sad," Erik mutters, glaring. "Do you have a problem with that?"
Munoz holds up his hands placatingly.
"No, no," Munoz says. "Sorry I asked. I just have a friend who has a crush on him and thought he was off-limits."
"He's not," Erik somehow manages to say through the churning in his gut. Munoz studies him for a moment before nodding slowly.
"Sure," Munoz says, though he sounds unconvinced. "I, uh, think I'll tell her to try someone else anyway. He's a little young for her."
"Whatever," Erik says. "It's none of my business." He can't believe he liked Munoz five minutes ago. Clearly the kid needs to learn to mind his own business. "I'm gonna be late to the pool."
He turns and leaves without saying goodbye, clutching Charles' binder in his hands. He feels hot all over, but that just means he needs to move faster and get to the pool to swim a few laps before practice officially starts. He can swim this off. He'll be fine. He's totally fine.
