tis the season, dudes

So, a couple weeks ago I made a post about my friend Jenn's mom and her heart transplant.

Unfortunately, I made that post about fifteen minutes before LiveJournal went down for several hours, so I don't think it got quite the audience it would have otherwise. Since I really want to do what I can to help out (and I've already donated myself), I'm rehashing a lot of that post here, with some updates.

This is what I wrote last week:

My friend Jenn is a super talented, super awesome person whose family needs a little bit of help right now. Her mom is in need of a heart transplant. She was born with a birth defect called Transposition of the Great Vessels which prevents the blood from receiving the proper oxygen to sustain life. She's had surgeries in the past to deal with it, but for the past year her health has been failing and a heart transplant is the solution.

However, any hospital stay is expensive, even with insurance. Co-pays and travel expenses and costly medications and recovery would be hard enough to cover for someone who is healthy and working, but doctors have advised her to stop working for the sake of her health and there are two college-aged kids to worry about, too.

Jenn and her sister have set up a fundraising campaign to try and offset some of the medical expenses from their mother's transplant. You can donate any amount and it's one of those "every little bit helps" sort of deals. So if you're thinking, "God, I've had way too much caffeine today, maybe I'll skip that fourth cup of coffee," maybe you could donate that $3 here instead. If you have more, that's great! If you can't handle it at this time of year, that's understandable as well.

First off, Jenn's mom has had her heart transplant! YAY! :D :D :D She's even already moved out of the ICU, which is super awesome!

But, of course, expenses don't end there. They still need a way to pay for all of the ins and outs of how life needs to bend and change in order to accomodate the surgery and life afterwards.

Please, if you have a few extra bucks, click here to donate. I've only met Jenn's mom a couple of times, but it was enough for me to know that her family is a lot like my family. A lot of you have met my parents and have said things like, "Well, now I understand exactly why you are the way you are," and Jenn's family is similar--a family of goofy, sarcastic nerds that I'm sure you could all relate to if you got the chance to know them :) You can learn more about Jenn and the whole thing in her own words here at her blog.

Anyway, here's the thing: If you donate, no matter how much, I will write you a thing. Now that the big bang's over, I've started writing stuff for everaidenn, bessiemaemucho, and lurkmuch, who managed to stumble on the last post despite the LJ down time. And I will write a thing for you if you chip in a few bucks. I can't promise it will be an epic, but give me some characters or pairings and some prompts and I will do my best.

If you don't have any spare cash (and I know it's rough this time of year, especially with the economy the way it is), I totally understand, but maybe you could help out by directing your friends over here too? Every little bit helps, folks ♥

giving back, friends
