Dr. John Malthusi had been teaching at Rocky Mountain Community College for fifteen years when Dr. McKay joined their staff. He’d thought that the name sounded familiar and did a Google search on him after it became readily apparent that the man himself wasn’t going to offer up any personal information. The variety and selectiveness of the information wasn’t much help other than telling him that Dr. McKay was very, very smart. John, not wanting to get off on the wrong foot with the vile-tempered man, had offered to share his coffee pot and insisted that McKay called him John. McKay had blanched and practically fled from the room - although he’d come back after a bit to take John up on the coffee offer. And he’d never once called John by anything but his last name. As the semesters passed and McKay settled into life at RMCC, he’d relaxed a bit. He started decorating his desk and had put up his diplomas. John, curious like a cat, still wanted to know more about McKay, but getting information out of the man (about anything other than physics) was like trying to talk to a brick wall.

One day, McKay came in shaken and pale, and twenty minutes after his first class of the day had ended. Malthusi asked him if he was feeling well, and in response McKay had said, “Did I ever tell you about my family?”

He hadn’t, and McKay damn well knew it, but he just shook his head and let McKay show him the people in the photo on his desk, two tears threading their way down his cheeks and whispering each name like a prayer.
