The second time is after a sparring accident. He limps into the infirmary with a bleeding leg and Sargent Fitzgerald rolls his eyes and then stitches up Ronon's leg. Fitzgerald usually takes the evening infirmary shifts and Ronon's seen him enough times that this is normal, routine almost.
It's the third time that gets him, that throws him like a punch. He's heard McKay and Sheppard and the others from Earth use the phrase "third time's a charm," and while he's not sure the exact context of it he still wants to say it when he walks into the infirmary after getting a burn from helping McKay and Sheppard keep some rogue bit of Ancient Technology from destroying a store room by the east pier. McKay and Sheppard are fine, if disheartened and avoiding the report they have to give to Elizabeth, but Ronon took the brunt of it and now Ronon is the one sitting on a bed as one of the newer Atlantis doctors walks over to him, smiling shyly and holding a bottle of salve and some bandages.
"I don't think we've met yet," she says. "I'm Jennifer Keller? I was only here a few weeks before--well, anyway, I'm the new CMO."
Ronon grunts in response and she looks like she's moments away from cowing away in fear. He almost, almost feels bad about that. She's pretty; she's got long blond hair and is small and slight and smells like antiseptic. He's reminded, suddenly and viscerally, of [what the hell was his girlfriends name?], and while his first reaction is to choke back the lump in his throat or run away in some mixture of anger and utter, stomach-churning fear, his second reaction is a traitorous little voice that says, is that really a bad thing?
He clears his throat instead and holds out his burn. "Ronon Dex," he says, not looking at her. "I'm on Sheppard's team."
"Then I'm sure I'll be seeing a lot of you," she says tentatively as she begins to spread the ointment on his arm. She looks up and gives him a small, shy smile, before focusing on her work again.
