That was a solidly enjoyable episode. I feel like fandom might not be thrilled because a) lots of Sam, b) almost no Sheppard, and c) Rodney being kind of an asshole. But, um, I think those were the reasons I liked it? Well, that and the TDS joke.

But really, I thought it was so awesome to see Rodney interacting in the field with people other than John. I mean, everyone theorizes that John and the team have a kind of rapport with Rodney that allows him to function and do a good job and stay in line, but this is the first time that we see that... that's kind of true. But at the same time, we get some really nice proof that he is a good person, that he can be brave and strong, all on his own without Sheppard or Ronon or Teyla egging him on.

Plus, we get to see more of Jerk!Rodney, who is normally cowed by Sheppard's banter. I loved how awkward he was with Sam and Jennifer*, mostly because they're women. Rodney doesn't know how to interact with women. He doesn't know how to interact with anyone, really, but I think that a mixture of both misplaced chivalry and male chauvinism work together to leave him completely clueless. It's kind of a four-part recipe to him being an asshole: 1 part not wanting to make Sam and Jennifer do things because he feels like he should be doing it, 1 part thinking he's actually better than them, 1 part that's a mixture of laziness and fear, and 1 part where he needs to be the one to come up with every solution for the sake of his pride.

Very interesting episode, when looking at it from that perspective. Oh Rodney, you're such a jerk. And I love you anyway. The hardcore feminist inside of me is crying little tiny tears.

Also, I loved the end, I loved everyone's acting, I absolutely ADORED the kids, and as I said in semirhage527's journal, I want the missing scene that went like this:
Keller: Major Lorne or Colonel Sheppard?
Carter: Well, I think--
McKay: Oh, Sheppard, obviously! ::pause:: I mean.... if I was forced. ::shifty eyes::

* For some reason, I still can't think of Keller as "Jennifer" unless I force myself. Same thing with Lorne and "Evan." I don't have that problem with anyone else on the whole damn series, but... yeah. I guess it's because their first names are used often in canon, but still...
