[advent 07] december two

So, before I post this I'm going to mention this AWESOME SciFi 2008 commercials that play a Matchbox Twenty song and make me want to dance around my living room.

Also, I feel the need to mention that I didn't even recognize Alan Cumming in Tin Man. WHOOPS. Ahahahaha, also? Callum Keith Rennie. I was way too excited about Zooey Deschanel and Neal McDonough to notice at first XD

Also also, I'm in love with the new BSG promos, even though I've totally sworn off the show. DAMN YOU, SCIFI CHANNEL.

Anyway. For nutmae's prompt of "first snow."

PXX-313 is colder than it has any right to be, at least, according to McKay who bitches for an entire three hours (Ford keeps time) about how he should have paid closer attention to the temperature reading from the MALP and worn his long underwear. John, for his part, keeps his mouth shut. He was at McMurdo for months before he sat in the universe's most powerful recliner. He could deal with the cold. He's more concerned about Teyla in her ittybitty tanktop, covered only by a thin command jacket then he is about keeping away his own goosebumps.

Still, when Rodney crawls into his sleeping bag in the night complaining about the chill, John's not stupid enough to protest. This thing between him and Rodney didn't normally include cuddling, but the man gives off heat like a furnace for all his bitching. The extra warmth keeps John calm and quiet through the night, so he doesn't even realize it's snowed until he hears Ford's whoop in the morning.

"You know," Ford says half an hour later when they're all bundled in blankets and sleeping bags, curled around the fire waiting for breakfast to finish cooking, "McMurdo was the first time I saw snow."

McKay snorts. "How tragic."

Ford ignores him. "I was at the SGC from April to October and then I was shipped out to McMurdo."

"That's quite the introduction," Sheppard says. McKay snorts again, but snuffles into John's shoulder instead of making a comment.

"There were a handful of us that had never seen snow before," Ford says. "We managed to get a couple hours to ourselves and run around outside until we were frozen to the bone. The other guys made fun of us a little, but it was worth it."

John nods and glance at Teyla, who keeps looking around them with wide, round eyes.

"What about you, Teyla?" he asks. "When was your first snow?"

"Ah, many years ago," she says, turning to look at the rest of them and composing herself as best she can. "When I was a child, my father and I went on a trading expedition much like this one. It was bitterly cold, and when we woke the next morning, the world was white. Athos... our climate was much too temperate to allow for such weather, and I have not seen it since. Do you have much of it on Earth?"

The nature of the different countries on Earth, the population, the size of the planet, had been explained to Teyla numerous times, but she still seemed to marvel at the distinct differences between regions.

"Some places," John says. "Canada, where McKay's from, is full of the stuff."

"Oh, way to further the Canadian stereotypes, Sheppard!" Rodney mutters.

"But America, where Ford and I are from, is pretty much all different. There are places where it's warm all year and places where it snows in winter..." He shrugs.

"Well, it is very beautiful," Teyla says, glancing around again.

McKay opens his mouth, as if to snap at Teyla, but glances around and gets just as caught up in the scenery as she is. "It is, isn't it?" he murmurs.

"What's the matter, McKay?" Ford asked. "Homesick for your igloo in the Great White North?"

"Oh, shut up!" McKay mutters. He pushes off of John and gets to his feet, scooping some snow into his hands. "I'll show you the great white north..." he mutters.

And that's how Teyla gets pulled into the middle of her very first snowball fight.
