music and stuff

Oh man, guys. On Sunday or Saturday night or whenever I have time, just wait until I tell you about this week. It will blow your mind, the ridiculousness of it all.

Anyway.

Today in the car, we were discussing a survey-type-thing being done by our radio station. We listen to WFUV which is a public folk/rock station out of Fordham University. Because we're nerds and/or hippies. This week (I think in conjunction with their beg-a-thon) they've been asking people to send in their top five "essential" musical artists, their top five over-rated artists, and their top five under-rated artists.

Over-rated, I had a little trouble with. I came up with four, but it took me an hour. There's a lot of music that I don't like, but it's hard to come up with something that's over-rated. Sometimes I just don't have the same tastes as other people, you know?

Under-rated was hard for an even harder reason, which is that the majority of the music my family listens to (and the majority of the music played on FUV) is generally independent stuff that no one attuned to popular culture has heard of. I mean, my mom put Lucy Kaplansky on her list. If you ask someone who listens to commercial radio who Lucy Kaplansky is, they'd probably have no idea. That's just the way we roll, you know? We're nerds.

But the point is, here is what I did come up with. To show how much I am a product of my parents' upbringing, the artists my father and I share are bolded. The artists my mother and I share are italicized:

Top Five Essential Artists at the Moment
1. Paul Simon
2. Dar Williams
3. Ella Fitzgerald
4. Barenaked Ladies
5. Indigo Girls

Top Five Four Over-rated Artists at the Moment
1. Bob Dylan
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Celine Dion
4. Fall Out Boy (I'M SORRY GUYS, I REALLY AM, I JUST DON'T GET IT AND EVERYONE AROUND ME DOES.)

Fun times. Good family conversation, clearly.

You guys should see the dress I bought today. It's super-hot. I'll try and post pictures on Saturday if I have time before work. I still need to get shoes, though...

Now, however, I have to write a story for itsproductivity and then call speccygeekgrrl.
