Warm and real and bright
Kisumai - Kitayama/Fujigaya
284 words, PG, Tangled AU
Fujigaya had always wanted to know more about the glowing lights that appeared on his birthday.

Written for 10minutes with this prompt, which turned into this because I've been wanting to write a KitaFuji Tangled AU for ages. :D I suggest listening to this as well ♥

Fujigaya was speechless as he watched the lanterns slowly lift to the sky, a sea of fire-lit stars that were doubly reflected in the water as Kitayama rowed them into the middle of the lake.

For years, for as long as Fujigaya could remember, he’d wanted to see the glowing lights that appeared on his birthday. The drifting stars that his father had never been able to explain to him. But now that he was here, seeing the lanterns rise into the sky, it was even better up close. Not stars, there was no magic here, but it was beautiful and dazzling.

“Why do they light the lanterns?” he asked, turning back to Kitayama with his eyebrows quirked together.

Kitayama glanced up at the lanterns and smiled faintly. “When I was a young boy, the prince was kidnapped by an evil magician and was never seen again. The King and Queen light the lanterns every year in memory of their son. But also… I think they light them in hopes that their son, heir of our kingdom, will someday return.”

“… I wish someone would remember me like that,” Fujigaya said, not quite sure why the story hurt the way it did.

Kitayama threw his head back and laughed, a rich sound that floated across the water. “Who says someone won’t?”

Blinking in wonderment, Fujigaya looked from the lanterns to Kitayama’s smile and the way the lights reflected in the man’s eyes. It softened Kitayama and for a moment Fujigaya could forget how they’d gotten here and that Kitayama was a criminal. For a moment Kitayama leaned in, pressing his lips to Fujigaya’s in a soft, sweet kiss.

For a moment, there was magic.
