They both rushed into the hospital, heading straight for the ER waiting room. Yuuri was nowhere to be seen. It had been nearly thirty minutes since the call, most of their time spent navigating through heavey traffic.
Yuya's heart was thudding in a way it hadn't for quite some time. He felt scared to death as his boss talked to the nurse at the desk, trying to find out where Yuuri and this Suzuki Ryouhei were. Yuya couldn't concentrate. Sure there was more then one Suzuki Ryouhei in the world, but Yuya had just dreamed about him. His image was still fresh in his mind...
“Takaki.” His boss's crisp voice brought him back and he glanced at her, guilty that he didn't have a clue about what was going on. Bloody hell, he needed to concentrate.
“Sorry, repeat that?” He mumbled. His boss just shook her head and waved him to follow after her and another nurse. The nurse was relating various bits of vital information, which Takaki filed away for future reference, now that he was paying attention.
“He's right in there.” The nurse pointed at a door ahead. “His little brother is with him.”
Yuya frowned as he followed his boss to the doorway. His Ryouhei hadn't had a younger brother. He felt relief blossom within him at that. Good. This couldn't be his Ryouhei. (In his mind, there wasn't even anything strange about thinking about Ryouhei as his. They should have belonged to eachother...)
And then his world was dumped upside down as they spotted the contents of the room. The utter reality was so shocking that Yuya actually choked, clutching onto the door frame to keep from simply falling to his knees. Shit, he should have guessed that Yuuri would have lied to get his way into an ICU. They only allowed family. Pain flared in his chest as he just stared, wishing this wasn't happening with every atom of his body.
Because lying in the bed, unconscious, was Suzuki Ryouhei.
His Ryouhei.
Older, matured, but still the boy he'd known all those years. He was so ghostly pale...Yuya brought back words the nurse had just told him. No whole bullets. Shrapnel. Dangerous in a completely different way, because it was extremely hard to get out of bodies...Severe trauma. Blood loss. 'If he lasts though the next night, he has a good chance of making it' The nurse had said.
He was frozen, unsure of what he was going to do. The boss was inside the room, scolding Yuuri for a few moments before asking questions. Yuya wasn't really listening again. Ryouhei was sleeping, and he ghosted towards the bed. He could feel the breath catch in his throat, tears coming to his eyes as he sat carefully on the edge of the bed, just staring at that face. “Oh, Ryouhei....” He breathed, his throat thickening. “W-why?” Why him? Even though they'd let go of each other, Ryouhei had been one of the sweetest, nicest, most perfect men Yuya had ever known.
As if in a trance, he reached out, brushing a lock of hair away from Ryouhei's face before gently tracing his fingers over his temple, down to his cheek. God, he was still breathtakingly beautiful. Yuya's eyes traced over the face he'd memorized years ago, noting the slight changes, some from mature, like the set of his jaw, some from what had just happened, like how his skin was slightly cold to the touch. Ryouhei's breathing was also slightly troubled.
The reality began to crash down on Yuya. He'd just found the very first love of his life again. A perfect man who had loved him too...And Ryouhei might not make it-Was probably not going to make it....
Ryouhei was dying.
He struggled to not just cry right there, blinking away the tears. He was losing Ryouhei all over again...But he couldn't come undone right now! He had to be strong. There was still a shooter out there. Crying over an unconscious Ryouhei wasn't going to help things. And Ryouhei still had a chance of being okay. Of recovering...
A slender hand touched his arm and Yuya turned his head to find Yuuri hovering next to him. “Takaki? Are you okay....” The other's eyes were so wide with concern, it was touching. Yuya's boss was nowhere to be seen, but he supposed she was gathering documents.
“I'm fine...” Yuya had managed to rid himself of the tears and smiled at the other guy. “I just...” He looked at Ryouhei. “I knew him...before.”
Yuuri look slightly stunned. “Really?” The teen's eyes traveled from Yuya to the unconscious man. “He seemed really nice when he was awake earlier....I'm sorry.” Touched by Yuuri's worry, Yuya patted his arm, shaking his head while standing up and turning his back to Ryouhei's motionless body. “Eh? He might wake up again, Takaki...”
Yuya smoothed out his shirt and then ruffled the other's hair with a smile. “You stay and be here if he does.” He told the other. “I'm no good here....I've got a shooter to catch.”
Yuuri nodded and smiled a bit. “I will....I bet she's going to make me stay anyways.” The petite boy added with a slight eyeroll. There was no doubting who exactly 'she' was and Yuya just smiled.
“Take care of him while I'm not here, okay?”
“Sure thing!”
Yuya headed out the door, his stride strong with confidence. Even if all he wanted was to run back and just stay by Ryouhei's side, the sensible part of him wouldn't let him. He was no good to Ryouhei. Tracking whoever shot him was something he could do, and while it wouldn't mean that Ryouhei would survive the night, it would mean something to Yuya.
There was also another reason Yuya left that room. Kouta was who he had, who he wanted....
And it wasn't like he could go back...
