"Nika, wait up!" Nana trailed after her best friend, lips stuck out in a pout. "You're walking too fast!!!" Nikaido Takashi was walking ahead of her, rushing as always. The girl was practically running to keep up. "Nikaaaaaa!"
The snarky boy merely glanced over his shoulder, smiling ever so slightly, lips forming a smirk. "Walk faster~" He said simply, not slowing down one bit.
Nana stopped in her tracks and planted her hands on her hips. Yes, this was her best friend. Yes, this was the boy she was hopelessly in love with...But that was just not very nice at all! "Nika, you can't just drag me out of my room and expect me to just run around with you." She huffed, blowing her bangs away in frustration. "Slow down or I'm going back home!"
She saw Nika stop and turn, those pretty dark eyes meeting her own. "Awww, Nana-chan, don't be like that~" He pouted at her, a rare sight nowadays. She stayed firm, shaking her head stubbornly. It really wasn't a big deal, but they were always at it like this. She enjoyed teasing and arguing with him just as much as she liked doing anything else with him. As long as Nana got to spend time with Nika, she was happy. He was always so busy. Even if she got to see him sing on stage, she still missed the times they used to spend together, playing in the tree house, getting ice cream, finger painting, or teaching Nana's puppy Yuki how to roll over and play dead.
Nika sighed in defeat, rolling his eyes as he sauntered back to Nana, tweaking her ponytail. "You're such a pain~" He commented non-chalantly.
"You're such a jerk!" She shot back, still pouting.
He grinned and tweaked her ponytail yet again, causing her to swat at his hands. "Little monster." He poked her nose, just to make her squawk another protest. "Come on, or I won't show you anything at all!" He smiled cheekily as she almost instantly settled down.
"Show me?" Nana looked up, curious. "Show me what?"
"Just come on~" He took her hand and lead her on, weaving through all the familiar streets that they had grown up in. Nana merely followed, laughing and chatting about the silliest things, like how Senga had a sweat problem and how Yuki kept on eating Nana's sneakers.
After a several more blocks, he halted and turned to her. "Put this on." He held up a black blindfold and started to put it on her, before she even had a chance to protest! Carefully, he tied it so it wouldn't pull on her hair. "Now...just follow me~" He took both of her hands in his own and started walking again.
She followed after him, heart pounding. Nika's hands over her's made her heart thud, jumping from her throat to her stomach and never going back to where it belonged. Now all she could hear was his silky voice prompting her to watch her step or to walk a little faster. She smiled to herself. Even if they would only be friends, she could enjoy every single moment she had with Nika.
And now Nika was stopping her, moving behind her. She felt him gently untying the blindfold, still holding it over her eyes until he whispered "Surprise~" With that, he let the blindfold fall and Nana gasped, eyes going wide.
In front of her, standing just as tall as she remembered it, was the treehouse. The Treehouse. The one that all the kids had declared a secret hideout, where Nana and Nika had pretended to be pirates or princesses, like all six year olds do. The Treehouse was now decorated with strings of white lights, lighting it up. To anyone else, it might have looked shabby...but to Nana, it was better than a magic castle.
"Nika..." She turned to him, not knowing what was going on.
He merely smiled elusively, taking her hand yet again and leading her to where the rope ladder was. He went up first, a deal they'd made long ago after Nana had accused him of trying to peek up her skirts. She followed after him, heading up into a world of forgotten dreams and memories. There was another gasp of surprised pleasure when Nana found Nika sitting cross-legged in the middle of the treehouse, ice cream and finger painting materials scattered around him.
"What's going on?" Nana asked, giggling happily. Nika had done all this? Just for her? She blushed with happiness, her heart still skipping several beats as she crawled in to sit next to Nika. The pretty boy merely handed her a spoon, a stack of wipes, and some paint.
"Let's just have fun, ne?" This time he gave her a real smile, the one that was just full of kiddish happiness that reached his eyes.
For the next several hours Nana painted, ate ice cream, and had the time of her life with Nika. They just laughed and joked and teased, even swiping paint on each other for paybacks. It felt just like the old times that Nana missed...Until they'd cleaned up. Then she realized that Nika was soflty calling her name. "Nana?" She looked over at him, surprised at his new mood.
Nika was now looking unusually flustered, as if unsure of himself. Nana hadn't seen him like this for years, Nika always looking so confident, no matter what was happening. Now he looked embarrassed, nervous, and maybe just a little blushy. "Oh, come on." She poked his shoulder, trying to get him to speak. "Spit it out~!" She waited, expecting some sort of teasing wit. She didn't expect what Nika did next.
He pulled her close, drawing her into a tight hug, his face buried in her shoulder and hair. Nana froze, her heart feeling like it had stopped dead. She hesitated for a moment, then she hugged him back. He clung to her for a moment, just silently holding her. Hugging him back, Nana waited. She didn't know what she was waiting for...but she waited. Finally he whispered "Thank you..." He untangled himself from the embrace and looked at her. "Thank you for supporting me, for being there when I needed someone, for making me smile, for...for everything." He was being open, honest, gazing at her with affection, gratitude...and a much deeper emotion that made Nana's breath hitch.
He leaned forward, close enough that their lips were almost touching, his breath brushing her cheek. She gazed into the eyes of the boy she'd adored for years, not wanting to move for fear that she would break the magic. "Thank you for being you..." He whispered before closing the gap.
Nana's eyes fluttered closed as Nika kissed her, hesitating only for a moment before kissing him back. Her fingers wound into his smooth hair as they shared the singularly most perfect kiss in the history of the entire universe.
Nana thought about all the stars she'd wished upon for this to happen. Had she caught her own shooting star?
Then Nika deepened the kiss and all thought blissfully melted away.
