Summary: Takaki has a very strange sort of memory loss and Yabu isn't quite sure what's going on.
Disclaimer: This work is purely fiction.
Warnings: ...It gets weird in the end, okay. -_-;;;
A/N: Main explanation is below, but I'd just like to give
tottchupi a big hug for helping me get through this... I don't want to say traumatic, but I will admit, it bugged me. xD I'm such a loser, omfg.
The cross-talk had wrapped up already, leaving Yabu and Takaki free to do as they pleased. Takaki occupied himself by stuffing his face with leftover crème puffs, obviously to his companion’s more restless state.
Yabu was nibbled on a crème puff, distractedly glancing down at it before returning his gaze to Takaki.
After a few repeats, Takaki caught him looking, quirking an eyebrow in question. “Something wrong, Kou-chan?”
“I thought you knew how to surf,” Yabu mumbled, shrugging lightly. It wasn’t like it should bother him at all, but it had been nagging at him since Takaki had said it earlier.
Takaki blinked for a moment before bursting out in laughter. “Not at all, silly. Scuba diving, remember?”
Yabu smiled weakly, nodding. He had been paying attention, but that didn’t change the fact that something felt distinctly off, he just couldn’t quite say why. Takaki didn’t seem to notice, simply eating another crème puff before breezing out the door.

“How come Yuuyan doesn’t know how to surf?” he found himself asking Yamada a week later. “I thought a bunch of you learned while we were in Hawaii.” It was such a minor detail, he doesn’t understand why he’s still dwelling on it. But it’s still there, at the back of his mind, a niggling feeling at the edge of his conscious.
Yamada looks profusely confused at the comment, putting down his sandwich for a moment. “Wait, what? Takaki knows surf.”
“That’s what I thought… He says he doesn’t,” Yabu explained quickly, drumming his fingers on the table, the tap-tap-tap matching the buzzing in his mind. It shouldn’t bother him, it doesn’t really bother him… but he just can’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
“No, yeah, that’s weird… Takaki totally learned how to surf in Hawaii. We were coached together.”
Daiki happened to pass by for that last snatch of conversation. Dropping himself into the seat next to Yamada, he broke in. “I thought Kitayama-kun taught Yuuyan how to surf?”
They both turned to stare.
“When was this?” Yabu asked after a moment, frowning in consternation. This wasn’t helping clear his head.
“I dunno… Summer of ’08?” Daiki mused for a moment, thinking about it. “It was like, after debut and all, I remember that much.”
“Can’t be,” Yamada scoffed. “He was totally clueless when we were in Hawaii.”
“I swear, he did. They spent like a week together, at the beach!” Daiki insisted. “I remember him talking about wiping out and stuff.”
“Who wiped out what?” Takaki stuck his head through the door, looking curious. “What’cha guys talking about?”
“Surfing,” Daiki said before Yabu could stop him.
Takaki’s eyes lit up. “I totally want to learn how to surf this summer,” he told them all in excitement. “We’d have time for that, wouldn’t we? It just looks so fun!”
Yamada opened his mouth to say something, but Yabu was ready for this one, hastily stepped on his foot and shaking his head no. “I bet we’d have time, Yuuyan.”
Takaki titled his head, just looking at the three of them for a moment before shrugging. “Well, anyway, Choreographer-san wants the rest of you, we’re going to try it all together now.”
“Comiiii~ng,” they all chorused, hauling themselves to their feet as Takaki smiled, vanishing back into the hallway.
“Let’s… not talk about this, okay?” Yabu said after a moment’s pause.
Yamada and Daiki were both frowning. “It’s just… weird.” Daiki grimaced. “I don’t get it.”
“I don’t either, but… I don’t know. Don’t bring it up, okay?” He stared at both of them until they nodded.
At least he knew why it was bothering him. It just didn’t add up and he didn’t get what was going on. It was a small thing, except somehow, somehow Yabu couldn’t help but feel apprehensive at the whole thing. Something wasn’t right.

They hovered over him in his dreams.
“Careful,” the first one said softly. “You can’t take too much.”
“But it’s so rich,” a second one wailed. “Can’t I just bite into a few more?”
“No!” its companion snapped. “One of these days you’ll eat the wrong one and he’ll wake up not knowing his name. We can’t be hurting the hosts like that.”
“I suppose not,” was the mournful reply. “It’s a shame, really… his heart-memories are the best. He's so sentimental.”
“We can’t be noticed,” the first one hissed, angry now. “You’ve already made too many mistakes with him. He’s too young, we could kill him.”
There was silence for a moment and then the first voice spoke again. “His heart-memories are too precious. I don’t want to rob him of them.”

A/N: OKAY, here is the explanation behind this... thing. I was checking my LJ yesterday and this Takabu translation appeared. I was uber excite, it's been a while since they did anything. Translation is
here. Within is Takaki saying that he's never surfed, but he really wants to try it out.
Which bugged me, because I remember reading (or maybe a friend told me) about how Kitayama and Takaki (and someone else, I think) spent some time at the beach in '08 or '09 and surfed. However, I couldn't remember how i knew that, so I am going to discount that as possibly just being false, unless someone else provides me with a translation or something that supports it.
However, I could also remember about how I'd read a translation last year about how he'd learned to surf (or attempted to) when they were doing photoshoots in Hawaii. Couldn't find the translation, but thanks to
tottchupi, I have it now. It's right
here... and he clearly states that he learned how to surf!
Again, I honestly have no idea how accurate either translation is, but until someone clears this up for me, I'm going to think about how there are things eating Takaki's brain - which could even explain why he's constantly messing up choreography, if you want to think about it. (
tottchupi provides a more realistic suggestion with 'Maybe he's a compulsive liar.' Take that as you will.)
