I am terrible at Halloween this year, internet. I haven't carved my pumpkin yet, I missed work!Halloween because of a stupid conference I had to be at, and I I didn't even get a chance to make the Halloween treats for my workmates that I've been thinking about for two weeks. Basically, I feel like Charlie Brown at the end of It's the Great Pumpkin ( Read more... )

It's not the traditional board that Charles is used to--it's literally a slab of wood, maybe a quarter of an inch thick, with the usual alphabet and numbers and "yes" and "no" and "goodbye." The pointer is wood, too, and Raven places it gently on the board.

"Who wants to go first?" she asks, grinning, and is met with resounding silence.

It's Moira who eventually huffs and puts her fingers on the pointer.

"It's all bullshit anyway," she says, which encourages Angel and Alex, too. Raven eyes Charles and Charles eyes Erik. A long moment passes before they move nearly as one to put their fingers along the edge.

They go through the usual rounds of questions--who likes whom, where are they going to college, the sort of things Charles has seen teenagers ask ouija boards in movies. It's not until they've gone through a few rounds that Raven waves them all away.

"We can't get a real read on it if we're all touching it. Anyone can move it. We need to do it one at a time." She turns to Charles, her smile glistening in the low light. "Charles can go first."

He lays his fingertips on the point and tries to look casual, like he doesn't believe this holds any weight, like it's all bullshit, just like Moira said. His stomach, however, is twisting into knots.

"Spirits," Raven says softly. "Are you here? Are you in the room?"

And then the pointer moves towards "yes."

Charles is so frightened he pulls his hands back.

"I didn't do that!" he hisses, his voice going high. "I didn't--it just--"

"Shit!" Alex says.

"He's just fucking with us," Angel says.

"Charles doesn't fuck with people," Moira says.

There's a long silence.

"Put your hands back on it," Raven says. "Just do it!"

Charles looks at all of them, his eyes lingering on Erik, who shrugs. He replaces his fingers, tentatively.

"Are you willing to speak through Charles, spirits?" Raven asks.

Again, without his help, the pointer slides to "yes." Charles shudders. He doesn't take his fingers off this time, but it's a near thing.

"What do you want from him?" Raven asks.

Nothing happens for a moment, then the pointer moves rapidly from letter to letter.

"G," Raven reads. "O-O-U-T. Goout?"

"Go out," Charles says. His voice is shaking. "It wants me to...go out?"

The pointer moves to yes.

"Out where?" he asks. Not that he possesses the power to move at all right now.

"Out on the balcony?" Raven asks.

The pointer moves to yes again.

"Alone?" Charles asks. His voice is nothing more than a squeak.

The pointer moves to the number 1.

"One other person?" Raven asks.

Again, it moves to yes. Then, it yanks itself out of Charles' hands and settles in the center of the board.

They all stare at it.

"You're not going out there, man," Alex says, just as Angel says, "You have to go out there."

Charles still can't move. Oh god. Oh god. What have they done?
