Maybe it was better that way. In the first few days, they'd been idle with shock. Too much time to think, not enough to do, and more than one day ended with all three of them crying alone, bundled away in their own little secret spots in the Hub. At least the work kept their minds busy. At least they couldn't dwell.
Still, a rift alarm at the end of an excruciatingly long day made every muscle in Ianto's body tense with frustration. He didn't have to glance over at Gwen to see that she felt the same way.
"We're on our way," he said quietly and without preamble, tapping his bluetooth to life. "You have the coordinates?"
"Got them," Jack said over the comm. "I'll meet you two there." Ianto could actually hear the tires squealing as Jack forced the SUV into an abrupt u-turn and he couldn't hold back a sigh.
"Your car or mine?" he asked Gwen.

Halfway to the sight of the rift alarm, Jack's voice crackled over the comm again.
"Don't rush," he said. "I'm here and it's not dangerous."
"So we can go home, then?" Gwen asked eagerly. He knew how she felt. It must have been ages since she last got to spend time with Rhys, and even though he, at least, got to spend the day with Jack, he couldn't remember the last time they'd had a moment to themselves.
"No," Jack said after a pause. "No, keep coming. But don't rush."
The line went dead again and, this time, Ianto and Gwen sighed in unison.

Ianto regretted taking his car when the reached the site of the rift alarm. It was out in an outcropping of woods, over very uneven terrain. He'd just had work done on the suspension, too.
"Jack," he said, "I don't know if my car can make it out there."
"It's not far," Jack replied. "You can walk it. You're here, then?"
"Yeah," Ianto said. "We're on the side of the road." He could see the trail through the underbrush that must have been caused by the SUV. At least jack had cleared a path for them.
"It should be just a couple more minutes. I'll see you soon."
Ianto and Gwen shared a look, and Ianto's aching muscles protested as he led the way into the woods. They kept to the tire tracks and picked their way around the jagged branches, and then they
stopped.
"Oh my god," Gwen said softly.
Ianto didn't have words.
The long, twisted object was lying on the ground about fifteen feet in front of the SUV, about thirty feet from where the two of them stood. It looked like spun glass, delicate and intricate and shimmering in the dark. A rainbow of colors danced across the surface and the light it gave off....
"Come with me," Jack murmured. Ianto hadn't even noticed his approach.
"What is it?" Gwen asked, taking Jack's hand, but not taking her eyes off of the object. Jack slid his other arm around Ianto's waist. He was still glued to the spot.
"It's space junk," Jack said. "It's nothing. It's a kind of building material for the rich and powerful on a particular planet a few galaxies away. This was probably some sort of decorative statue. It's useless."
"It's beautiful," Ianto whispered.
"I know," Jack said. They came to a stop near the front of the SUV. Jack kissed his forehead. "I know."
Jack climbed onto the bonnet and gestured for the two of them to follow him. "It will probably only keep glowing for a few more hours now that it's away from its power source," he said as Ianto leaned against his side and Gwen climbed up on the other side of Ianto. "I just thought...."
"Yeah," Ianto said quietly. He rested his head on Jack's shoulder and drew Gwen closer against him.
"Yeah," Gwen repeated.
They sat together until the final shimmers faded into the night.
