I think hoarding is part of the brain-type of overly creative people in general. Certainly, everyone I know who is extremely artistic, and/or has multiple hobbies, is a pack rat extraordinaire.
One of my favorite ways to do pocket shrines is to take a heavy duty matchbox, spray paint it matte white, and proceed from there. It makes for a much smaller shrine, but when it is done right, it comes out really delicate - almost magical. They're great for use in the car, because they fit in the car's ashtray or on top of the dashboard while taking up 1/3 the space of an Altoids tin. Plus, the cost is much more affordable - you can usually get a package of 20 matchboxes for the cost of one Altoids tin. Plus, the matchboxes don't smell of mint. Not that it's a bad smell, but not all themes go with that scent.
I'm looking forward to your tattoo themed shrine - please post pictures when it's completed! My niece, who spends most of her time traveling around the country, has been studying the Norse religion, Asatrur, for many years now. So my next project is going to be a pocket shrine dedicated to the Aesir and Vanir, the two Norse pantheons. I'll post pics if it comes out well.
Ah, Asatru! I studied Heathenry for a while, I even made a devotional bust for Loki, I'll try and post the pic on my LJ (though he ain't everyone's cup of tea. Much misunderstood IMO). It's a rich tradition, with almost as many denominations as Christianity, your niece should have a great time getting to know the Aesir/Vanir. My Hoodoo workspace has a small Odin figure on top of my ancestor bundle. Hoodoo's nothing if not eclectic! Thanks for your encouragement, I'll keep you posted.
Okay, that's just too coincidental to be a coincidence!
I practice Asatrur also, but not exclusively; I also practice Ifa and Hoodoo. Odin often visits with Obatala in my house. Many of the more hardcore Asatrur believe that one should practice one religion or the other, exclusively. I disagree (obviously), and so I don't really talk about my particular blend of faiths to too many people IRL - I've run afoul of the Folkish types enough times to know better. I consider myself a Universalist, even though I started practicing Asatrur in order to get more in touch with my Norwegian heritage. As a practitioner of Ifa who happens to have blue eyes and ridiculously pale skin, I'd be a Hel of a hypocrite if I thought any other way. :)
I agree that Sigyn's husband is very much misunderstood. Chaos is a necessary force in the Universe, and without it we would stagnate and die. I've done quite a bit of Loki work over the years - usually alone, since there are members of my Kindred who would be seriously not cool with that.
Between the Aesir, the Vanir and the Orisha, life around here is very rarely boring. ;)
