"Popcorn pictures have always ruled. Why do people go see these popcorn pictures when they're not good? Why is the public so stupid? That's not my fault."
-- George Lucas, quoted in Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind
Actually, Mr. Lucas, you're wrong on two counts. The public are not stupid. It's easy to dismiss them as being stupid. People certainly behave that way a lot, but most of them are not actually stupid. And here's the kicker: to the extent that they've been conditioned to consume without thinking... this is very much your fault, more so than anyone else in the film industry. The period from the late '60s to the mid '70s was the golden age of American cinema, an almost unprecedented period of independent diversity and creativity. And you stepped up and resurrected the flashy, formulaic blockbuster. You showed Hollywood it was safe to be lousy again. Every piece of garbage on our screens owes a debt to you.
Just saying it, knowing you won't hear it, knowing it wouldn't matter if you did. But with all the hype I'm seeing right now, this is one of those times my bitterness builds up and leaks out of its own accord.
