YABC Swaps ALL THE BOOKS!

Last Saturday my book club, The Young Adult Book Council, put on the first (of what might be an annual) book swap. It was hosted at the Montrose-Crescenta branch library, in their meeting room; all the left over books were donated to them. We had planned it awhile ago, and it was also intended to be a meet and greet for Young Adult folks (librarians, readers, authors, fans, etc), unfortunately many people that I'd invited had to work and couldn't attend. Still, there's always next year right?

As always, we made so much food! Roxy made pigs-in-a-blanket, Alethea made dulce de leche chocolate frogs, and I made my famous deviled eggs. In celebration of St Patrick's Day I attempt to make green eggs, but they kind of came out a radioactive yellow.

I had decided about a week prior to take the opportunity to do some spring cleaning; I've collected quite a few doubles and books that I'd read but weren't all too interested in. By the time I had finished weeding my selection I had about ten to donate. Though it made a decent dent in my selection, I was afraid there wouldn't be too many books at the swap. Boy, was I wrong.

There were about four tables stacked with books, and boxes of books under the tables. There were SO MANY BOOKS zOMG! We had a small crowd come in, mostly friends that had been invited and some who wandered in from the library. Pretty much everyone who came left with a handful of books or more.

I had no intentions of actually taking books; the whole idea of the spring cleaning I'd done was to make room for the books I already have. So naturally I left with a tote bag and box full, though only seventeen were for me. Since there were so many books, I was sending pictures to the children's librarian at my branch and she was choosing books for our branch. I brought back thirty-two for the children's librarian, and three for the YA librarian. Most of my selections were YA.; unless I absolutely adore them, I'll probably end up donating most of them to my branch after reading them.

I'm a little annoyed because in my desperation to get rid of books and made room, I think I accidentally put Ashen Winter (the sequel to Ash Fall) by Mike Mullin in the donation pile. I'd read the Ashfall and, though I enjoyed it, I didn't feel too drawn to reading the sequel anytime soon. I still don't think I would have chosen to get rid of it, but some how it's disappeared from my bookshelf; ironically, I picked up a copy of Ashfall at the swap. It was when I got home and shelved it that I realized the sequel was no longer there. I'm mostly annoyed because I like to have the series, even if I don't like them all equally.

Other than that and the small crowd it was a good event. Already those who couldn't attend wish they had. I'm certain that next year we'll probably get a bigger crowd.
