In Where I can't Find My "Off Button"

It's unbelievable how quickly this year is passing me by. In terms of how much I've read (or how little), I keep saying to myself the same things I said at the beginning of the year, "I've still got time, I've just been in a slump for a couple weeks." Then I realize that it's actually been a couple of months... then I realize it's pretty much been all of 2012.
At the last YABC meeting we all came to the conclusion that 2012 has been a slow year compared to recent years. It's reassuring to know that I'm not the only afflicted with a sort of lack of enthusiasm.

But...

Despite being a lazy reader this year, I've still been very productive. Generally if I miss a semester of school I fall into a slump of staying up late watching tv or reading, waking up late the next day, going to work, coming home and staying up late reading. It's a vicious cycle of laziness and procrastination that I fall into for lack of academic responsibilities and deadlines. This semester I've fought against that, and I think I'm doing a damn good job. Between  last month's activities and this month's, I'm almost glad I didn't get into any classes.

Work
I asked the YA librarian to let me lead the planning and execution of our Teen Read Week program with authors Janet Tashjian and Ann Stampler. Ann I had met at a Bridge to Books event recently, she's an absolutely darling, but I didn't meet Janet until the day of the event and she, as well, was wonderful. The event was fairly successful considering it was my first big program. (Granted I lead the Banned Books Week program, but it was very "last minute" and wasn't nearly as successful.) We had a writing contest, the winner got a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble, as well has having an excerpt of his/her story posted on our blog with author blurbs by Ann and Janet. I'll be writing that up this weekend hopefully.

Halloween
I've been working hard at my Halloween costume. I wrote about it briefly in an older blog post where I've been updating the photos of what I've been working on. Go here for photos and info on that.

Eric and I went to Universal's Halloween Haunt last week. It was fun, especially since they had a few Walking Dead themed mazes, but I was disappointed at how little I was scared. It's not easy to startle me in those mazes, I'm a bit too aware of when we're suppose to be "distracted" by something to the left so that something to the right can pop out and surprise you. I find myself having to work at being relaxed and not obsessively. aware. of everything.
My level of neurotic attention to my surrounds is probably a good thing, but in this case the "haunt" is wasted on me to a degree. Either way we still had fun.

ErMerGerd Zermbers!

I won tickets to the Knott's Haunt for this Saturday night. Yay for doubly fun at half the cost!

Keeping It Classy
I was introduced to a cute little theater past downtown called The 24th Street Theatre. Last month I went twice to see their Mexico based play Roma Al Final de la Via. Holy crap that play was beautiful.
After following the theater enthusiastically on Twitter, I ended up winning tickets to see their next play Nearly Lear, a one woman adaptation of King Lear. It was also amazing.

Eric and I went to see the Book Of Mormon for his birthday, it was hilarious. If ever, in the future, Mormon missionaries ring my door bell, it'll be a hell of a job not to burst into a giggle fit. I may end up quoting the musical to them, as I'm sure has been done already considering the level of popularity this musical is receiving.
