Megabus is really great. I have had one bad experience in probably 12 or 15 trips and that was a bus that didn't show up for like three hours. Which sucked. But other than that it's been great.

As for O'Hare to Union Station. I think you would want to take the blue line to Jackson, then walk West on Jackson to Canal St and Union Station. It would take awhile but I think you could get there by six.

You want to take the Blue Line from O'Hare to Jackson for sure. At that time of day the traffic on the expressway from O'Hare could cause a pretty delayed commute. And the cabs will charge you a fat chunk of change. The blue line will be $2 each. You'll be riding in the middle of the road on the train and you'll be able to see if the traffic is moving faster or slower than you. I'm guessing it'll be moving the same speed.
