I may have said too much...

So, its a week and a half after my birthday and I'm STILL having arguments with my youngest brother about what a nice gift for me would be. His world and my world are just so different that we're just not seeing eye to eye. He's going on about how you should get a person something that they need. (Even if it doesn't make them happy, apparently... ( Read more... )

#1: My husband got me a vacuum cleaner for Christmas one year. I loved it. Even though I hardly ever use it...

#2: I like the vet idea, although I didn't know you can take lizards to the vet. If your brother insists on getting you something retarded, just go with the clothes gift card. Everyone could use more clothes. I will even go with you!

#3: The Saber maid costume looks like any old french maid costume you can buy at Nobbies/Mangelsons around Halloween (Trust me, I've shopped for them). I just don't think it's anime enough.

#4: The Duel Ex Maid doesn't look maid enough for me... It looks like random shoujo battle armor.

#5: I like the third maid picture, and I really don't think it has all that much skin showing. With the big bow, you can't see much of the chest, and the back isn't even that low. And I really like the straps. I think it's cute. Heck, you've had costumes that showed way more skin than that!

#6: The Shana one is okay... I little Alice in Wonderland. Reminds me of the Otakon mascot one year. I think it's the blue/white stripped tights, which PS, do not exist. We scoured the WORLD and the internet for blue/white stripped stockings for Katie's animal crossing costume and never found them, so you would have to make them/paint them/whatever. Unless someone decided to market them over the past year, which would be nice.

I see your point with wanting to cosplay an actual CHARACTER as a maid, but the problem is that they are so removed from their original element/context, I just don't know if anyone would recognize any of those. (Hurray for Japanese drawing random pictures of random characters in maid costumes...) If you wanted to go that route, I try to find a character that actually wears a maid costume frequently, or just make something cute and anime inspired. Just my thoughts... :-)

1# I dunno, I guess I'm just the type that wants something fun to play with for holidays/birthdays. If its paired with something fun and isn't the only gift, then yea, I don't mind practical...

2# Adam unfortunately turned down the vet idea. Says he doesn't want to spend more money on the vet bill than the lizard cost. Can't say I blame him, its why I've agonized over it so much. Plus not knowing the life expectancy sucks. If it were Gecko or Ony, they would've been at the vet already... they cost a good chunk of change (as adults at least, babies not so much) plus both are supposed to live over 5 years. (I think geckos live up to 7, don't remember on beardies.) If he does still get me a gift, I think I've at least made it clear I would far prefer the clothing gift card.

3 and beyond: You've pretty much summed up a lot of the cons I was thinking of on the costumes in question. I appreciate the feedback, cuz you never know if others will see the things that pop up in your mind. I think the last two are my top choices right now. I should clarify what I meant by it being too much skin, it's not a problem with normal dress rules (or my standard), its a problem of if I were trying to make it fit lolita, as the person I was working with was suggesting our maids try to fit (mostly so it wouldn't look like a cheap french maid). Lolita is VERY strict with the amount of skin showing. If that were posted on a loli forum (and ignoring the fact that a lot of them don't like maid costumes being classified as loli) I'm sure they'd say throw a blouse on underneath that... and I think the fact of how the black accentuates the boobs would be an issue. But I'm probably analyzing things too much and as long as I'm not going for a slutty maid, should be ok. I don't know why... but I REALLY love that bow in back. Oh and that shade of red on the bow paired with the black and white.

Here's black haired Shana in the black maid outfit:

(red hair is basically her battle mode)

Both maids would require some sort of hair style change to get cat ears on there. I'm having a hard time coming up with any maids from series I liked... (only actual maids I can think of right now are Tokyo Mew Mew, Hand Maid May or Steel Angel Kurumi...two of those I watched very little and saw none of Steel Angel). I could go with your last suggestion and sort of use that third image as the base and then work in a bit of cat in there (ears, tail... and maybe some paw print applique somewhere on there).

Looks like I should shop for a cheap cute pair of black mary janes, since all those maids were wearing them.
