Just the other day, Steve Jobs addressed the world and told it that the iPod-range was getting a makeover. The bells would be bigger and the whistles would be louder than ever before. Even though the new Nano got me quite excited, the one that really caught my attention was the spanking new iPod Touch. Just look at this glorious piece of hardware!
It's just what I've always wanted in an iPod! It's basically an iPhone without the phone and with a Flash-drive that's up to 16Gb!
Someone less nerdy might think that this is just an iPod with a spiffy interface but no! Even though the touch screen interface is absolutely brilliant, there's more to this baby than meets the eye. For starters, it's got WiFi integrated meaning that you can buy stuff from iTunes without having to visit your computer. Sure, that's really neat and all but what's REALLY cool is that this badboy boasts a full-fledged web browser, not just something that you might find in any old phone, a real browser. Also, since it runs on MacOSX, a UNIX derivate, you can write your own apps for it.
One of the real biggies when it comes to browsing wireless networks on a portable device is that all too many public hotspots are "user friendly". When things are "user friendly" it really means that you take a fairly simple task and then make a custom solution that works great when the customer's system looks exactly as you've intended but all too often, that's not the case. A public hotspot often utilizes a login webpage, which is fine when you're using a portable computer, however, many WiFi-enabled devices don't even have a browser to handle that request. That basically means that you're left out in the cold. Unless you're an iPod Touch of course.
So, here are a few reasons why I "need" this fantastic device:
- When I'm at school, I'm constantly in a WiFi-network that more or less requires a webpage-login, right now I can't use it so instead, I spend a lot of my time searching for a desktop PC that isn't taken.
- My current iPod (a first generation Mini) is finally falling to pieces. It's had a battery change before but now it's really starting to act up on me.
- Look at it, it's as pretty as can be!
The only problem is that it costs money and plenty of it. Lots of money and being a student is an equation that doesn't quite add up.
