" * * *

You know, maybe I should give up on Evans. I don't really seem to be getting anywhere with her," the sound of James's voice drifted lazily between them, their eyes on the lake; shiny and glowing gold due to the setting sun and laid out in front of the two Marauders just for their viewing pleasure.

Sirius, head lying on his arms as he stretched out next to his best friend, rolled his eyes. "Prongs, you're wearing her down, bit by bit. A year ago I would've agreed, but come on. Don't give up now. Not when you're so close to the goal."

"It's just aggravating," James ran a hand through his hair as he leaned back against the rough bark of their secound favorite tree. "Maybe if she was showing some kind of sign that I was actually getting through to her, it'd be a little easier to get through each day."

"You know, it's not often you go down this stupid pity road, James," Sirius's use of his given name grabbed James's attention, and he glanced over, "At least you've got any kind of chance with her. There's no chance whatsoever of the person I'm interested in returning my feelings, so stop with your party."

James turned to look down at Sirius, brow furrowed. "I didn't even know you were serious about anyone. You've never mentioned anyone before. Black, in love, love, that's big news. Who's the lucky lady?"

"Trust me," Sirius brushed him off, "It's no one you know. But believe me, if I was as lucky as you, I wouldn't sit there and whine. I would /make/ her love me. At least you've got some kind of a chance at all."

"It can't be all that bad," James bit back as he reached over and grabbed a sizable piece of grass. "Maybe you should be taking your own advice."

"Naw, I've already decided I'm going to die alone. Best not ruin my hopes," the sound of Sirius's laughter sounded hallow, even to him.

"Look at us, two riddiculously stunning blokes sitting around feeling sorry for themselves and moping. I'd almost feel better in detention."

They both laughed this time, and it sounded real by both of their standards. It wasn't until Sirius relaxed again that James decided to press, "So really, who's is it who's managed to capture your attention?"

"No one at all," Sirius responded stubbornly, "Quit asking."

"Well how do you know you're really in love then?"

"I dunno, it's just, when you look at them you get tingly, you know? Do you feel that way with Lily? Like, everything would be perfect if you'd just take that step and close the distance but you're so scared of ruining everything that you don't. And then you're alone, but you didn't chase them away, so it's not okay, but it's not broken either."

"That's a little deep, Pads," James looked up as he knots the grass in his hands, "I didn't know your emotional range ran that far."

"Har, har," Sirius rolled his eyes teasingly, "Regardless, the subject was you, if I remember correctly, and how you're a damned idiot if you give up."

Grin considerably brighter, James stood up, offering a hand to Sirius as he did so. "You're right, let's head back."

Taking the hand, but not his own advice, Sirius stood as well, preparing to make his way back to the castle.

"Just give me a hint. What's the first letter of their first name?" James isn't Sirius's best friend for nothing, and they're there to push.

"It's an R, you prat, now let's go," Sirius grins and then they're racing to the gate and James forgets to go through all the list of girls that start with R's the next day because Lily says yes, yes she'd give him one chance.

Not that it would matter because he'd be going down the wrong list anyways.
