ethics in journalism

Jun 22, 2007 00:51

besides being morbidly fascinating, this story reminds me of a question of ethics brought up in my high school Freshman journalism class. Is it more appropriate to quote people exactly as they say something or to correct their grammar for readers so as not to make them sound like an idiot (but thus altering the truthiness of the quote). I can't remember what the teacher suggested, but indubitably I disagreed with her as was my rebellious nature. In any case, I think the context is important... in some cases I think it should remain intact, but in this case, I think the writer just makes the witnesses sound stupid (and they probably are... but that's besides the point right?)
