New episode of Bones

My thoughts on the new intern

Finn Abernathy. That's the new intern's name and he's from South Carolina (I think...could be North Carolina, I can't remember for sure).

Anyway, he's from the South. And anytime I hear of a character coming onto a show and he (or she) is from the South, I tend to cringe. Because, well, let's face it, Hollywood isn't usually very kind to Southerners. We either come off as someone who flunked the 1st grade twice, someone who is ashamed of where we come from, or someone is writing the character and doesn't have a clue as to how a real Southern would talk, react, etc.

So far, I like Finn. Granted, we've only seen him on one show and this could change. But even though he talks a bit slow, with a lot of drawl :), he's smart as a whip. Yeah, he's got his Southern sayings (and trust me, every person in the South has an odd saying or two floating about in their vocabulary), but he knows his stuff. I did love Cam's face when Finn said (upon finding something odd in the remains), "I found something odder than my Cousin Bobby." Cam just wasn't sure how to take this.

It reminded me of the Designing Women episode where Julia tells someone that Southerners don't hid our crazy relatives in the attic, we bring 'em down and sit them in the living room for everybody to see (or something to that effect). Point is, we generally aren't ashamed of having relatives who are a half-bubble off plumb, if you know what I mean.

I hope that the writers at Bones don't turn him into a stereotypical Southern redneck so that others can make fun of him. Hodgens tried already, but Finn set him back on his heels pretty quick. It was a pleasure to behold...a smart Southern character who isn't afraid to speak his mind and isn't ashamed of where he comes from and doesn't change the way he talks just to fit in.
