Native American Music

When you think of music you may think of drums or guitar or something along the lines of modern day music but when you listen to some type of foreign music it’s much different. When you hear Native American music you mainly hear vocals, it is usually choral, but some nations prefer solo singing. The music of the Native Americans is traditional it is as diverse as the people themselves. In this type music there is no harmony or is there polyphony, although on some occasions there is some singing between the chorus and the soloist. Most of the time the only instrument you will hear is the sound of a drum or a type of rattle but this is only in some of the tribe’s music you also hear a lot of wind instrument like a flute. The rhythm of this music is irregular because there is no conception of absolute pitch. Native American song is the way to communicate with supernatural spirits. The Native American people also think of there songs to be gifts from the “creator”. The music is seldom played for the sake of being played. The music can be played to bring the rain, victory in a battle, or for helping the sick. There are three sets of songs; there are traditional songs, ceremonial and medicine songs, and modern day songs. Songs can be handed down from generation to generation if a song is handed down to a child that song is the child’s song for his or her whole life. The people of the plains such as Blackfoot, Lakota, and the Crow are just some of the few people who use flutes often. The Navajo Indians use a rattle and a drum to accompany there singing. The great lakes people well most of there music is religious the more common instruments they use would be some type of drum, flutes, and rattles.
