On our way to water the community garden my friend told me that it was suicide. We walked in silence past the Baptist Student Center, down the little path peppered with cobblestones. As we watered the winter seedlings I said a prayer for all the people I love and have loved. As I ate the yellow cherry tomatoes off the vine and winced as the red pepper numbed my lips I thanked God for my tongue, for my strong arms that carry watering cans, for the lips that kiss and whisper prayers to the Almighty.

I long to hold all of you close to me, away from the barbs that would wound you.
