We sold our old car yesterday. 1995 white Ford Contour. It was the first car we bought as a couple and we were its first owners (previously leased car though). We simply went to a nearby lot, said we want to sell it, he asked make/model/year/mileage and how much, I said $400, we walked over and asked me to open the hood, he checked the oil dipstick to make sure there wasn't anything weird in the oil, asked me to turn it on and rev it up a few times, and SOLD. Now $400 doesn't seem like much, but it had 116K miles, it needed a major front end alignment, front hood was bent up and rusted at the front due to a minor bump I had with our minivan several years ago on the icy roads of pennsylvania, had a cracked windshield, the engine light was always on due to a malfunctioning fuel injection filter, broken cup holder inside, and it was pretty much in need of a really good cleaning (inside and out). Someone had even egged one of the windows and we never even bothered to clean off all of the egg shells. I suspect it was a disgruntled student from last semester. Blue Book value given its issues was about $330, so we got slightly more than that. I was surprised, but there was no test drive, no inside the car inspection, and we had never gotten the car inspected in North Carolina, because we knew it would never pass. So we have been driving it around illegally basically for 3 years. We're a little sad to see it go since it was our first car and we NEVER had any problems mechanically with it on the road. It was a great symbol for our relationship: a little dirty here and there, a few bumps throughout its life, but everything works just fine and got us where we needed to go. And now we can finally cancel the insurance (since we don't need 3 cars) and save ourselves a few bucks, which will go toward the payments of our new car, which is a very smooth-looking, driving luxury car! :) It makes us happy too.
So long, 1995 white Ford Contour! Hope you can make someone else happy.
