Theistic atheists and agnostics

Jun 30, 2008 20:30

A recent survey shows that 1.6% of Americans identify themselves as atheist and 2.4% of Americans identify themselves as agnostic.

However, 21% of the atheists said that they believe in God, including 8% who are absolutely certain that God exists. 6% of atheists believe in a personal God; 12% of atheists believe in God as an impersonal force.

These "atheists" appear to not know that an atheist, by definition, does not believe that God exists. In fact, an atheist, by definition, believes that God does not exist.

Similarly, 55% of agnostics said that they believe in God, including 17% who are absolutely certain that God exists. 14% of agnostics believe in a personal God; 36% of agnostics believe in God as an impersonal force.

These "agnostics" appear to not know that an agnostic, by definition, does not know whether or not God exists.
