RIP Lis Sladen

Lis Sladen's Sarah Jane Smith wasn't my first Doctor Who companion (that was Jo Grant) but she was a vital part of the winning team that made the programme's golden age what it was, and she, Harry Sullivan and Tom Baker were in the Tardis when I really fell in love with the show.

She was so much more than just a character who tripped over and got captured by the monsters, she invested the companion role with real depth, warmth and humanity. A little of that came from the writing, but most of it came from Lis Sladen. She was a wonderful actress, and seemed to be a wonderful person too. In many ways, she was and always will be THE Doctor Who companion.

I'm so pleased that she made a comeback in the new Doctor Who and then had her own series, and that she was loved by a whole new generation of fans.

RIP Lis.
