I think the department just made decisions earlier. They don't start reviewing until after the deadline anyway. I was quite surprised to get a letter so soon - I wasn't expecting anything until the end of this month at the earliest. So I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another few weeks for any letters to come to either of us.
Also, I'm sure you've heard this before, but everyone is different. Even if something happens to 99% of all couples, that has no bearing on your particular situation. You two have already made it a long time together and seem to fit really well, so I have high hopes that everything will work out for you.
1. I heard back - but from a school with the earliest deadline in the biz. And that biz is not science. Lots of hope. And good karma! all being sent your way.
2. I've heard that as well that doctoral degrees split up a lot of marriages. (well, relationships I guess but this dude was talking specifically about marriages) b/c a PhD candidate has to be very selfish in order to get through school. However, John seems very chill and understanding of reasons why you'd need to be selfish. That and there's no real research done on how hard these people tried to make things work, or how good the relationship was going into grad school. There's a lot of people getting married too young and/or for the wrong reasons. I guess grad school is just one of the manymanymany myriad deaths relationships can suffer. ... so while you're worrying about that you should worry that the laundry situation will split you up. Yep. The laundry. And the lack of communication surrounding the laundry. ... I'm on crack.
