Mac & Jack's African Amber is quite possibly my favorite beer ever. Every time I'm up in Seattle to visit my brother, I make sure to get a pint.
Also worth trying is Boont Amber Ale (though I've heard it's better in CA than WA), anything from New Belgium Brewing (Fat Tire, etc. Made in CO), and some very interesting beers from a Quebecois brewery called Unibrowe (or something like that). Unibrowe's beers tend to be almost fruity and surprisingly complex.
On Whiskey:
I've become quite fond of Glen Fiddich recently. Their 12 year is surprisingly buttery for a younger scotch, and not too expensive (~25/bottle). Their 18 year is quite mellow and very pleasant, and we've also had a 21 year from them that was aged in Cuban rum barrels, which is impossible to buy in the States, but oh so good.
If you want whiskey education, get to Edinburgh and go to the Whiskey Heritage Center. They have a Whiskey bar with very nearly every scotch whiskey on the market. Nancy, Hans and I went twice, sampling a total of about ten different single malt whiskeys. It was good times.
