Quick observations on Calgary, day 2

Jan 23, 2008 17:41

A lot of stuff is really expensive up here - at a downtown pub I paid $7.50 for a pint of Alberta-brewed beer, and even at a local neighborhood bar outside the middle of town it's at least $4.50.  A basic, half-ton, 4WD pickup truck starts at $45,000 new, and a new Nissan Murano starts at $40k.  Property is expensive, almost as insane as the Peninsula (half a mil for a 1300 sq-ft. condo).

Real Canadian-brewed beer is absolutely delicious, and if you've never had it and you like beer, you owe it to yourself to get your hands on some.

Some smokers here absolutely love American cigarettes, and will do almost anything to get them.  On the advice of a friend, I bought a couple packs of Marlboros before coming up here, and last night I sold one pack for $30 and a pint.  My cost?  $3.75.

If you get fries at a sit-down restaurant or a bar, they bring you brown gravy to dip them in.

More updates as my stay progresses!
