It sounds coarse....

But I treat other people like animals.

Not the stockyard (lure them and bash them and feed upon the carcass) sort...

But the beloved pet.

I grew up around horses.
And when you grow up riding horses, you learn very early what a companion is, what a cooperative relationship is, what dual responsibility is,... when to fight and when to loosen the reins. You gain a second-sense to realize when you (or the animal's) stubborness is warranted or not.

Horses are a lot like people.
They respond to affection.
They can have bad habits they can be trained out of.
They can have bad personality traits that you learn to work around.
Most of them are smart, but don't mind playing dumb.
They don't look foward to hard work, and try to shrug it if they can.
They don't like being hassled when they're in a bad mood.
If you gain their loyalty, they'll throw themselves off a cliff to help you.
If you gain their hatred, they'll throw YOU off a cliff and laugh as you fall.
They are happiest when they are with friends and cooperating.
They easily get lonely, and they like to cuddle when they feel this way.
They can kill you anytime they want to.

That experience growing up has been invaluable as an adult, especially an adult trying to figure out romantic relationships and lasting friendships.
