Last night: Four hours of due South. Mmm, revel in the Kowalski goodness. Seriously, in "Perfect Strangers", looking at Callum is equivalent to looking at the sun. I don't know if it's the blue shirt or the appearance of the black leather jacket, but gah...very much the gah. Plus, he's just all sorts of funny snarking up a storm when they go to ( Read more... )

Theodore Nott is one of the few that pays attention in History of Magic. He doesn't really think he can learn anything relevent to the coming war from daft lectures concerning long forgotten goblin wars, but he never dismisses the possiblity outright. It is only one of the many ways that Theodore seperates himself from the rest of his Slytherin brethern.

Over time Theodore has learned that wars in his world are fought more over ideology than territory. That's where they generally differ from the Muggles -- they settle pissing contests and family fueds with hexes and curses, they save war for the really important issues like blood and ultimate power.

He pours over Muggle histories whenever he gets the chance. It's easier at home than it is at school, but Theodore manages. He studies medieval conflicts and Napoleon; he pours through accounts of the British in India and of the internment camps of the Boer War; he reads of the Somme, Gallipoli, and of the Arab Revlot but it when he reaches the modern conflicts, that is when he starts to take notes. He reads of the rise and fall of fanatical dictators and it is all to easy to picture his fellow classmates goosestepping down the drafty halls of Hogwarts.

Finally he reaches what the Muggles call "The Cold War". He recognizes it instantly for this is the war they are currently waging. There have been no real battles yet, but there have been casualties. There are always casualties. That is the reason why Theodore studies his Muggle history right along with his Wizarding -- he doesn't want to become a casualty, he has more important things to do. Above all, Theodore doesn't want to build an aristocracy of blood, he wants to build an aristocracy of the mind, even if it means borrowing from the Muggles to do so.

I hope I did him justice. For identifying with him as much as I do, he's a tough Nott to write. My respect for you grows evermore. :)

My professors would be so proud that I could finally put their lectures to good use. I'm so glad I have you to share the history kink with me.

*proposes marriage to you and Theodore immediately*

Best marriage offer I've had since 9th grade. Dude, my brain can't handle the possibilities of you, me and Theodore in a civil union. *G*
