Sandy West, the drummer for the Runaways, died. A rocker's life, I suppose, as she died of lung cancer. Her grandfather bought her her first kit. Brava to her for being fierce, and bravo to him for being a kick-ass granddaddy.
It's been amazing to me how, when I started drumming, I knew exactly one female drummer in real life and could name exactly one female drummer in a commercially successful band. I haven't particularly been seeking out lady drummers but I guess the more you drum, the more drummers you meet and the more your ears and eyes pick up on who's behind the kit, because I know or can name several now. Last week, the new student after my slot walked into the studio; it was a colleague of mine from Big Pink. It's getting noisy out there!
