Title: An Unexpected Triumph?
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG
Genre: Dark, Angst
Characters/Pairings: Regulus, the James Potter clan; Regulus/?
Warnings: character deaths
Spoilers: none really unless we're talking RAB
A/N: This is what happens when anger and a word prompt collide. Word #150 at 15minuteficlets set me going just when I most needed an outlet. Unbeta'd and written in about 20 minutes though this is a scene I've been dwelling on and trying to write for some months now; I guess I just needed to be sufficiently pissed off. Heh.
Summary: The WW is in chaos, Regulus is in hiding, and the Potters have just been murdered. How will Regulus react?

Of all the things you could have done, you chose this to hurt me? Where am I to go now? Who am I to love? I waited patiently whilst she satisfied her family's wishes--better to marry a noble wizard than one whose family is so entrenched in darkness. That's what her parents told her. And she bowed her head, pretending to obey, waiting until the time was right to show the world I'm not so bad. I'm different and not so callous as my parents would have me be.

But you, filthy half-blood -- the truest scourge our world could know -- you dare to set your sickening Mark over her home!? From our home, my hiding place since I dared to take your precious locket, proving my value to Dumbledore, I watch it float above, gloating to the world that the Dark Lord's word is law.

Grabbing her invisibility cloak, secretly given to me out of love .... and fear, I race to the rubble remains of the Potter home. My heart beats a frantic pace, fearful of finding her. James Potter first, Sirius' best mate ... my supplanter. Tremulously stepping over him, I climb the stairs certain I will not find the unexpected. Behind this gossamer fabric, the room -- Harry's room -- looks nearly pristine except for the still warm figure lying on the floor, with a frightened but triumphant look on her face. I crouch down to caress her cheek when the infant's cry echoes from behind, chilling my blood almost to a halt. Yet, on looking up, I find him -- the unexpected Boy Who Lived beneath a protecting bundle -- sweet love! Will I have my triumph after all?
