Word: Jubilant

The Christmas holidays had finally arrived. The castle was decorated with its usual lights and holly boughs and the immense trees Hagrid always dragged in. This Christmas, though, would not be the tense affair of the past few years. Sirius would be with the Potters-his new family. What was the point of going home if his brother wouldn’t be there to trip down the stairs on the way to Christmas morning presents? No. It would be best to avoid his mother’s pitiful sighs and his father’s gruff newspapered chair. Regulus would stay on at Hogwarts.

He awoke Christmas morning to the usual smattering of presents. A broom servicing kit from his mother, a tome on the Dark Arts from his father, a subscription to an obscure humorous zine from Uncle Alphard. But nothing from Sirius. Not even a card.

Christmas breakfast looked to be an equally solemn affair. He sat alone at the Slytherin table, poking at his sausages when a soft grey owl fluttered down next to him. Looking up morosely, Regulus saw the strange owl carried a small, awkwardly wrapped box. He furrowed his brows, his pulse picking up slightly as he opened the gift.

Inside, a small piece of parchment covered a brown-framed mirror. “If you ever need me,” it read. A jubilant smile slowly emerged. They were still brothers.
