The Complete Jane Austen: Persuasion

Jan 13, 2008 21:02

I know, I know. I've been home a month and haven't updated. Will do so this week sometime. But because I'm a crazy lady and the Jane Austen season has begun on PBS, and I know a number of you are also watching, hey, why not a post where we can discuss our reactions to the new (and old) adaptations? So, tonight we have Persuasion (some PBS ( Read more... )

My drive-by assessment:

I am so glad that you commented on the running. I was like, I don't remember running. And the shakey camera drove me bonkers...it was so distracting. Instead of focusing on Anne finally getting her man, I felt like she was running from an axe murderer.

Wentworth was delish.

I enjoyed it. I'll admit that it has been a while (a long while) since I read the book, but I was also wondering about the "Loving longest" conversation being with Bennick. I'm glad that I am not remembering wrongly. The running was a bit distracting, however, I did like the fact that when she finally finds Wentworth, all you can hear is her breathing. That was nifty. I also thought that the plotline with Mrs Clay and Mr. Elliot was well explained, in comparison to the other Persuasion movie.(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114117/)

On another note, I must say that my inner geek was excited by the fact that Alice Krige (from Star Trek: First Contact) was playing Lady Russell and that Anthony Head (Giles from BtVS, squee) was playing Sir Walter Elliot.

I defo agree with you on the Mr. Elliot/Mrs. Clay storyline in this version. The focus on her breathing was also a nice touch--I really picked up on that last night too.

AHA!! I knew I knew them from somewhere!!!

Okie doke. I've not read Persuasion so I have nothing to compare it to, but I enjoyed it! I actually wondered if Anne keeps a diary in the book because I suspected it was just a way for the filmakers to convey her thoughts since the book would be told through her POV (whether 1st or 3rd person ( ... )

Was this one of the spankin' new adaptations?

Yessireebob! It's out on DVD already in the UK so I rented it this past summer. If they could've had RPJ as Wentworth in the version with Amanda Root, I'd've been a very happy camper. That version (with Ciarian Hinds as Capt W O_o [see icon]) I like a lot (despite Mr Hinds).

I'll be interested to hear what you think of the story once you've read the book!
