No matter how many times I read this book it just isn't one of my favorites, mostly because of the Steph/Morelli relationship problems. I adore the two of them together, but I also realize they aren't in the right space to take the next big step. I'm cool with that. What I'm not really cool with is Ranger's attitude -- how he didn't really want Stephanie until things with Morelli heated up and then when there was an "engagement" he offered her the deal. To me, that's not being a friend. It's a personal thing for me. I don't hate Ranger because of it, it's just disappointing no matter how HOT those scenes were between them.
I thought Eddie was a nut job, but he turned out to be much more sane than Sophia who was just plain batshit crazy. Vinnie was right when he said he shouldn't post bond for older people any more because if they miss a few days of their meds, they go insane. Clearly Eddie should have been on some type of anti-depressants, but knowing him, he'd just flush them because he's too much of a man to take them.
As always I have to say that Stephanie is my favorite character. Despite her flaws, she doesn't need to be saved from herself and I can completely understand why she took offense to Morelli giving her the ultimatum. There's no way I would take that crap from a man either! I really enjoy her relationships with her family and friends -- I know this sounds weird, but they're realistic...the family chaos, the feelings of protectiveness that she has for her Grandma Mazur, Dougie and Mooner. She's as real as real can be for a fictional character. I like that and I like that I can sympathize and relate. I think that's important to be able to have those types of feelings for the heroine of the story.
I didn't think there was enough Lula in this one, but I suppose Evanovich had to make room for Mooner. I thought it was pretty funny when Stephanie called Vinnie to be her backup. The whole scene of he and DeChooch having the shootout in Soba's house was awesome. Vinnie's potty mouth was a bit shocking, but if you think about it, he's a slime ball and would totally say those things without regard for someone else being in the room with him. We got to see more of his personality in this book and I liked that.
And another car down for Stephanie. I really have no idea who would keep insuring her at this point. Unfortunately, the CRV went out with little fanfare. I'm used to her cars exploding now and feel gypped out of a good scene when the car goes quietly into the night...or this time smashed like an accordion between two cars. I guess I like a flair for the dramatic. ;)
Valerie suddenly showing up with Angie and Mary-Alice was interesting. It made Stephanie's life look a lot more stable. I'm not big on the Valerie love and it doesn't get any better as her storyline progresses, but she's family and she's a good contrast to Stephanie.
I guess that's about it. I'm not looking forward to Hard Eight, but I love Stephanie and her pals, so it's all good.
