1. Once upon a time Turlough really fancied Tegan. For the few seconds before she opened her mouth and started to shout at him. Then he thought better of it, and went straight to hating her. Over time this hatred underwent changes, becoming stages of annoyance, grudging acceptance, and eventually beligerant friendship. He was genuinely sad when Tegan decided to leave the TARDIS crew, but also thrilled to get the Doctor to himself without Tegan being loud near them.
2. Turlough really hated cricket. It was one thing at that bloody school that he never could get the hang of, he'd swipe at the ball and miss every time. When the Doctor stared off into the middle distance recalling his triumphs at cricket however, Turlough felt pre-disposed to liking it, because it did for the Doctor what only the Eye of Orion had done for himself since leaving Earth. Made him look at peace.
3. As much as he hates the Uniform, Turlough keeps wearing it, because it's a symbol of home. Not that Earth is home, far from it, miserable, damp little place with such a casual attitude to sending young growing things to a prison to conform instead of being individuals. But at home some things were the same. Especially when the war came. So many people, all in the same Uniforms, killing one another for the sake of nothing. Turlough ran. And he was punished, exiled to that dank hole of a backwards planet. Earth. But as much as he hates the Earth, the Uniform and the idea of war, he keeps wearing it. Because it's all he has that's familiar when he's standing on a planet knee deep in sludge with Tegan shouting in one ear and the Doctor trying to calm her down in the other.
